Navigating Basic-Needs Insecurity through College
Abercrombie, Christy C.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
This study examined the experiences of college students with basic-needs insecurity as they navigated campus, community, and federal support resources through a national pandemic. This exploratory qualitative study utilized interviews and focus groups with college students, to examine how they learned of resources, chose between similar resources, and their experience with access and utilization. This study gathered recommendations from participants on how colleges and universities might improve the support of their college students that experience basic-needs insecurity. This study found that participants' material needs increased and shifted away from campus resources to the utilization of community and federal resources during the height of the pandemic. Information received about resources was varied and intermittent, but campus and federal resources came predominantly from participants' institutions, while community resources were learned of through individual research and word-of-mouth. Participants encouraged institutions of higher education to provide information about campus, community, and federal resources through a variety of mediums on a continual basis and adopt a single point of contact or central location for resources. The adoption of a more holistic and intentional approach to providing information to college students that include the range of campus, community, and federal resources through a variety of mediums, would address gaps in basic-needs support and provide more responsive assistance as needs shift.
