Community Schools: Creating Community Learning Spaces in a New Social Contract for Education
Madeline Raynolds
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
This study examines the potential of community schools to revolutionize the educational landscape by creating a more impactful and locally tailored ecosystem. Through Action Research methodology, the research explores how deep community engagement can reshape educational experiences, focusing on the Flexible Pathways Initiative that empowers students to choose where, when, and how they learn beyond traditional classrooms. The research surveys the current landscape of the Flexible Pathways Initiative and assesses how the community could support schools in providing more authentic learning opportunities. Key themes emerging from the study include fostering contextual relationships, coalescing around a shared vision, aligning stakeholder interests, and developing integrated, community-driven solutions. A reimagined educational framework should be viewed as a collective societal effort, showcasing how community-school partnerships can transform learning, promote equitable, significant, and culturally responsive educational experiences. Ultimately, the study calls for a paradigm shift towards inclusive, interconnected educational models that prepare students to navigate and thrive in a complex, ever-changing world. It underscores the importance of reframing the community-school relationship to better support student-centered learning and cultivate an understanding that knowledge is an integrated framework and knowing is an integrative process.
