The major variables known to affect divorce patterns in society are war, economic fluctuations, and legislative changes. This study suggests that at least one of these--legislative changes--also affects divorce filing patterns. (Author)

The present study focuses primarily upon wives in Black middle-class families, with comparisons made to wives in middle-class White and working-class Black families. Results suggest that Black middle-class wives have higher employment rates because of economic need. (Author)

The proposition that age at first marriage is inversely related to the risk of divorce was examined by means of detailed age-duration-specific divorce rates for California 1969. A strong inverse relationship was found for male ages at marriage 18 through 25 and female ages at marriage 16 through 24. (Author)

It was found that Ss from heterogeneous couples were less authoritarian than Ss from homogeneous couples. On three measures of prejudice (social distance, characteristics evaluation, and attitudes toward behavior expressing prejudice), it turned out that Ss from heterogeneous couples were less prejudiced than Ss from homogeneous couples. Incidence of premarital pregnancies among brides marrying in 1970-1972 in Australia is analyzed with respect to relative ages of bride and bridegroom, bridegroom's occupation, and bride's country of birth. Relative frequency of such pregnancies was very high among very young couples but declined with increasing age. (Author)

Changes from decade to decade in family life cycle patterns are analyzed for women who have married this century. Women entering marriage today are expected to have one to two fewer children, to end child-bearing three years sooner, and to have 11 more years of married life after the last child marries. This study examines the relationship between the gender of children already born and the likelihood of having subsequent children. Results indicate couples with previous children of the same gender are consistently more likely to bear an additional child. This relationship is more pronounced among Anglos than Mexican Americans. A total of 440 adult couples were observed in eight different kinds of public places. Couples with children were observed to touch, talk, and smile less at one another. This study provides estimates for the Nye and Berardo model of the effect of age at marriage on socioeconomic attainments.
