Morrison, Gary R.; And Others – Educational Technology, Research and Development, 1989
Discussion of learner preferences for text densities on computer screen displays highlights two studies of college students that compared preferences for multiple or single screen presentations with high-, medium-, or low-density screens from an actual course using computer-assisted instruction. Results are analyzed, and further research needs are…

King, Kira S.; And Others – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1996
This experimental study used graduate student participants to investigate the comparative perceptibility of hypertext navigation buttons in various configurations, using pictorial symbols and text labels. Findings indicate that buttons with both pictorial symbols and text labels resulted in significantly less user confusion. (Author/LRW)

Grandgenett, Neal; Thompson, Ann – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1991
Describes a study conducted at Iowa State University that investigated the effects of using guided programing instruction to train analogical reasoning. Two groups of students are compared who received different types of programing instruction, and the far transfer and the near transfer of instruction are explored. (35 references) (LRW)

Greenlee-Moore, Marilyn E.; Smith, Lawrence L. – 1994
A study investigated the effects of interactive CD-ROM software on children's reading comprehension. It explored whether 31 fourth-grade children in an elementary school in a suburban school district in the Midwest comprehended narratives better when reading from the printed page or from the same text displayed by the computer. One class read each…

Simutis, Zita M.; And Others – 1976
Forty-two enlisted men and women with no prior knowledge about electronics maintenance or logic diagrams participated in research designed to collect preliminary data on the training effectiveness of a problem solving computerized game for teaching electronics maintenance. Two games available on the University of Illinois PLATO Computer-Based…

Emurian, Henry H.; Seborg, Brian H. – Computers in Human Behavior, 1990
Describes a study of undergraduates that examined differences in computer screen formats and their effects on search time and strategy. Row, diagonal, and column information formats are compared, as well as tightly packed and loosely packed displays, and results of regression and residual analyses are discussed. (38 references) (LRW)

Welsh, Thomas M.; And Others – Educational Technology, Research and Development, 1993
Describes a study of undergraduates that compared three strategies for indicating links in a hypermedia system to determine their effect on learner navigation and learner perceptions of ease of use. Highlights include three linking display types; the density of links; elaboration types; time intervals; and implications for hypermedia system…

Strommen, Erik F.; Frome, Francine S. – Educational Technology, Research and Development, 1993
Describes a study that examined the effectiveness of 1 configuration of automatic speech recognition software and hardware with 36 3 year olds and a comparison control group of 20 adults. The greater variability of children's speech is discussed; possible system modifications are considered; and future research is suggested. (18 references) (LRW)

Barba, Robertta H. – Journal of Research on Computing in Education, 1993
Describes a study of high school students that investigated the impact of embedding an instructional map into hypermedia courseware on student achievement. Treatment of experimental and control groups is described, results of pretests and posttests are compared, and implications for software designers and teachers are suggested. (Contains 23…

Johnson, D. LaMont; And Others – AEDS Journal, 1982
The effectiveness of a computer-assisted training method using computer simulation of two subsets of the Wechsler Intelligence Test for Children--Revised was compared with traditional methods for teaching the administration of the test. Results suggest that the computer simulation was a very effective teaching method. Eleven references are listed.…

Mayton, Gary B. – 1991
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the animation of visual information when used in conjunction with text and static visuals in microcomputer-based instruction. Of particular interest were consequent performance on higher level learning tasks as a result of viewing these forms of visual presentation, and those levels of…

Rekert, Deborah M.; And Others – 1990
A study compared Penn State University's computer-aided Reticence Program, for shy/reticent public speaking students, with two existing approaches: (1) oral interpretation and (2) the lectures, demonstrations, and coached rehearsals of more traditional reticence instruction. Thirty reticent students, including 9 males and 21 females, were placed…

Dalton, David W. – Educational Technology, 1986
This study of 134 introductory junior high industrial arts exploration students compared effects of interactive video instruction on learner performance and attitude to determine what learning tasks best lend themselves to interactive video instruction. Three experimental treatments were used: conventional computer assisted instruction, video…

Schloss, Patrick J.; And Others – Journal of Research on Computing in Education, 1988
Describes study that compared the performance of high achieving and low achieving undergraduates on two computer assisted instruction modules, one in which learners were forced to review informational frames following errors and one where the review was optional. Dependent and collateral variables are discussed and criterion referenced tests used…
