Kemler, Deborah G. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1982
Previous findings of a developmental trend from holistic to analytic modes of processing are subject to two possible interpretations: the ability to analyze according to dimensions increases with age, or a production deficiency for the strategy of analyzing decreases with age. This study tests these interpretations through an examination of…

Dodds, A. G.; And Others – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1991
This comparison of the performance of 40 congenitally blind children (ages 9-19) with and without retrolental fibroplasia on cognitive and spatial tasks found no significant differences. Findings suggest that early environmental experiences are responsible for successful performance, and that mental and spatial problem solving may depend on…

Fletcher, Claire M.; Prior, Margot R. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1990
In contrast with younger children of the same reading age, reading-disabled (RD) children performed poorly when they were required to independently abstract grapheme-phoneme (g-p) rules and use them to pronounce pseudowords. Results suggest a phonologically based productive deficit which interferes with the learning of g-p rules. (RH)

In this present study, a social learning theory of the family which links cognitive performance with distal and proximal environment variables is tested. The findings suggest that differences in the cognitive performance of children are better understood by analyzing relationships between structural social forces and the family learning…

Huguet, Pascal; Monteil, Jean-Marc – Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, 1995
Tested whether social comparisons with probably less fortunate others differently affected boys and girls' cognitive performance in circumstances maximizing concerns about social integration and peer acceptance. Results from 64 French 10- to 12-year-old children show boys performed better than girls when adverse social comparison was anticipated,…

Juan-Espinosa, Manuel; Cuevas, Lara; Escorial, Sergio; Garcia, Luis F. – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 2006
The general ("g") factor is the most general and relevant cognitive ability. Gallagher, Richard – 1981
In order to investigate the relationship between problems in behavioral control and children's capacity to utilize mediational strategies for self control, the responses of a group of disruptive (N=20) and nondisruptive (N=20) kindergarten children were compared in their approach to delay of gratification tasks. Subjects were compared on three…

Labouvie-Vief, Gisela; Levin, Joel R. – 1974
This paper reports an attempt to replicate previously published findings on the interrelationship between free-recall performance and selected cognitive abilities. Heyman, Gail D.; Gee, Caroline L.; Giles, Jessica W. – Child Development, 2003
Three studies investigated preschoolers' reasoning about ability. Findings suggested sensitivity to mental state information when judging another child's ability, and they perceived positive correlations between effort and academic success, and "niceness" and high academic ability. Comparisons with 9- to 10-year-olds suggest that…
