Not so Different: The Overlapping Constructs of Teamwork and Mentorship
Jonathan M. Orsini
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Florida
An overwhelming amount of research has been conducted to explain teamwork and mentorship as independent constructs. This study used quantitative methods to demonstrate that despite independent research traditions, teamwork and mentorship are highly similar overlapping interpersonal constructs. In this study, two previously validated survey instruments measuring mentoring and teamwork respectively, were combined and disseminated to agricultural faculty with membership in the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA). These faculty self-assessments of mentoring and teamwork competency were analyzed using multiple linear regression (MLR) and structural equation modeling (SEM) to demonstrate the high similarity and overlap between the two constructs. MLR demonstrated that mentoring and teamwork had comparable relationships to critical predictor variables and SEM showed a significant and strong relationship (parameter estimate = 0.81, R[subscript 2] = 0.66, p < 0.01) between the two constructs. This dissertation is formatted into three papers over five chapters. The introduction provides background information on mentoring and teamwork and presents a conceptual model for how the two constructs overlap with an integrative capacity framework. The second chapter addresses the findings from the MLR on faculty mentoring self-assessment, the third discusses the results from the MLR on teamwork self-assessment, and the fourth chapter examines the outcomes from the SEM analysis. The final chapter discusses the overall findings, the theoretical implications of the significant overlap between mentorship and teamwork, future research directions, and recommendations for leadership practitioners.
