Five methods of assessing student projects in science at the university level are surveyed and strategies for using them are suggested. Describes the uses of and reactions to, various preparation resources, and a large national sample of SAT candidates. Data suggest that students have a variety of attitudes about preparing for the SAT, but most believe in the efficacy of some method of preparation, and use more than one method. (RC)

Determines effectiveness of the active game medium compared with a conventional method of teaching mathematical concepts to second grade children. Two separate groups were taught 15 lessons by each method and were given pre, post, and interval tests. Results indicate no significant difference between the two teaching methods. (DS)

The effectiveness of computer aided instruction (CAI) is compared with that of videotaped instruction in the teaching of diacritical markings to postsecondary deaf students. Data indicate that cognitive skills were well taught by CAI in a short time without requiring teacher or student time in class. The TV version did not teach well. (CT)

Evaluation of large-scale programs is problematical because of inherent bias in assignment of treatment and control groups, resulting in serious regression artifacts even with the use of analysis of covariance designs. The portfolio method of assessing past experience for the award of academic credit is compared and contrasted to the project-syllabus method. It is suggested that the project-syllabus method is a more appropriate form for evaluating past experience. (Author/SF)
