Peer reviewedTyler, J.; Hardy, R. C. – Alberta Journal of Educational Research, 1978
Thirty subjects were presented with a visual form discrimination task requiring them to match Roman letters when a variety of transformations were held constant. They were given massed practice across four blocks of eight stimuli. Results of a repeated measures analysis of variance showed support for the distinctive features hypothesis. (JC)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Discrimination Learning, Distinctive Features (Language), Hypothesis Testing
Peer reviewedFowler, Robert L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1987
This paper develops a general method for comparing treatment magnitudes for research employing multiple treatment fixed effects analysis of variance designs, which may be used for main effects with any number of levels without regard to directionality. (Author/BS)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Comparative Analysis, Effect Size, Hypothesis Testing
Peer reviewedVincent, Ken R.; Duthie, Bruce – Social Behavior and Personality, 1986
Examined the comparability of Rorschach Inkblots and the Holtzman Inkblots. Subjects (N=27) were administered both instruments and their responses scored using the standard Holtzman Inkblot Technique variables. The number of responses was controlled when using the Rorschach. Results indicate that the Rorschach Inkblots were a satisfactory…

Peer reviewedHakstian, A. Ralph; Whalen, Thomas E. – Psychometrika, 1976
Details of a reasonably precise normalization technique for coefficient alpha are outlined, along with methods for estimating the variance of the normalized statistic. These procedures lead to the K-sample significance test. (RC)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Comparative Analysis, Error Patterns, Hypothesis Testing
Brunsman, Bethany A.; Lukin, Leslie E. – 2001
The state of Nebraska has adopted a unique approach to statewide reporting that requires school districts to develop district-level assessments of the state student content standards or district standards comparable in quality and to report the results to the state and public. This system allows districts to base their assessments on what they are…

Peer reviewedWhitney, Douglas R. – American Educational Research Journal, 1972
This paper describes two statistics (chi square and Kendall's S) which may be used to test hypotheses about the association between two variables when observations are cross-classified in a contingency table. (CK)
Descriptors: Attitudes, Comparative Analysis, Hypothesis Testing, Mathematical Applications
Peer reviewedSoares, Louise M.; Soares, Anthony T. – Child Study Journal, 1970
Results of a study of 707 students show that all disadvantaged children do not necessarily have negative self concepts. In fact, they show just the opposite at the elementary school level; however, self concept diminishes for both disadvantaged and advantaged students at the secondary school level. (NH)

Peer reviewedLinn, Robert L.; Werts, Charles E. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1971
Two problems in the investigation of predictive bias in tests, the effect of unreliability of the predictors, and the effect of excluding a predictor from the regression equation on which there are preexisting group differences, are discussed. (Author)

The reliability of simple difference scores is greater than, less than, or equal to that of residualized difference scores, depending on whether the correlation between pretest and posttest scores is greater than, less than, or equal to the ratio of the standard deviations of pretest and posttest scores. (Author)

Peer reviewedMackenzie, Richard S.; And Others – Journal of Dental Education, 1982
An investigation of the use of microfiche to replace bulky clinical testing materials is reported. With each student serving as both experimental subject and control, taking each kind of test, student preferred the nonmicrofiche form. No difference was found in time taken for testing or resulting grades. Sequence was significant, however.…
