Tanner, R.; Trown, E. Anne – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 1979
Mathematical tasks calling for relational thinking were given to 60 children of Indian, Pakistani, or Bangladeshi origin who had spent their school lives in England, 60 who had arrived within the past 3 years, and 60 British children. Hirsch, Thomas M. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1989
Equatings were performed on both simulated and real data sets using common-examinee design and two abilities for each examinee. Results indicate that effective equating, as measured by comparability of true scores, is possible with the techniques used in this study. However, the stability of the ability estimates proved unsatisfactory. (TJH)

Hills, John R.; And Others – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1988
Five methods of equating minimum-competency tests were compared using the Florida Statewide Student Assessment Test, Part II, for 1984 and 1986. Four of five methods yielded essentially comparable results for the highest scoring 84% of the students. Different lengths of anchor items were compared, using the concurrent item response theory equating…

Reynolds, Trudy; And Others – Language Testing, 1994
Presents a study conducted to provide a comparative analysis of five item analysis indices using both IRT and non-IRT indices to describe the characteristics of flagged items and to investigate the appropriateness of logistic regression as an item analysis technique for further studies. The performance of five item analysis indices was examined.…

van Joolingen, Wouter R.; de Jong, Ton – Instructional Science, 1992
Discussion of computer simulations used for exploratory learning focuses on the design of a hypothesis scratchpad that students can use for hypothesis generation and testing. An experiment with college chemistry students that compared three versions of the scratchpad is described, and the effect of the scratchpads on learning environments is…

Resnick, Lauren B. – American Journal of Education, 1994
Explores issues involved in using assessments to define standards and encourage efforts to meet them and compares the European examination system with the American testing system. Also considered are issues of the definition of learning domains in ways that do not encourage narrowly focused training on specific assessment items. (SLD)

Johnston, Bill; Kasper, Gabriele; Ross, Steven – Applied Linguistics, 1998
A study in interlanguage pragmatics investigated the effect of three types of rejoinder (positive, negative, absent) on non-native informants' choices of strategies to perform complaints, requests, and apologies. Results show strategy choice differentially affected by rejoinder type, suggesting that findings from studies using different production…
