Clinch, Jennifer J.; Keselman, H. J. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1982
The analysis of variance, Welch, and Brown and Forsyth tests for mean equality were compared using Monte Carlo methods. The tests' rates of Type I error and power were examined when populations were nonnormal, variances were heterogeneous, and group sizes were unequal. Recommendations for use are presented. (Author/JKS)

Lane, David S.; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1983
Ten- and 12-year-old students received instruction that demonstrated the terms and relationships of conditional syllogisms. Both discovery and rule instruction increased average performance on written syllogistic reasoning tests; discovery instruction was generally more effective than rule instruction. (Author/LC)

Marsh, Herbert W.; Hocevar, Dennis – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1983
This paper describes a variety of confirmatory factor analysis models that provide improved tests of multitrait-multimethod matrices, and compares three different approaches (the original Campbell-Fiske guidelines, an analysis of variance model, and confirmatory factor analysis models). (PN)

Wichmann, Theodore F. – Journal of Experiential Education, 1983
Summarizes and synthesizes five studies using evaluations of their Outward Bound or adaptive programs for delinquency intervention. (ERB)

Wilson, Gale A.; Martin, Samuel A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
Either Bartlett's chi-square test of sphericity or Steiger's chi-square test can be used to test the significance of a correlation matrix to determine the appropriateness of factor analysis. They were evaluated using computer-generated correlation matrices. Steiger's test is recommended due to its increased power and computational simplicity.…

Rouse, John – Language Arts, 1983
Discusses two approaches to teaching poetry writing to children: a method approach that molds children's creativity into acceptable forms, and an experimental approach that allows children to try out personal feelings and different forms, which is more conducive to their perceptions, creativity, and developing sense of self. (HTH)

Maddrell, David – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1982
Three training methods differing in degree of abstraction (demonstration, slide-diagram, and diagram) were used to instruct adolescents (26 control and 21 aphasic) in the completion of two tasks. Results indicated that aphasics have a deficit of abstract thinking which can prove a handicap in training situations. Ten sources are cited. (EJS)

Gibbons, Maurice; Phillips, Gary – Canadian Journal of Education, 1982
Describes growing acknowledgment worldwide that educational services must train people and provide support systems for lifelong self-directed education. Outlines 10 basic elements of programs designed to teach self-education, including visualization, learning style, personal curriculum planning, risk experiences, and self-culture. (Author/BRR)

Gades, Robert E.; Dougal, Barbara – Business Education Forum, 1979
A study which compared the composition approach of typewriting instruction with the traditional approach found no significant difference in typewriting speed after one year of instruction. Students trained with the composition approach showed significantly fewer errors on straight-line timings. (LRA)
Descriptors: Business Education, Comparative Analysis, Instruction, Nontraditional Education
Jonassen, David H.; Falk, Laurence M. – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1980
Describes a study that compared two methods of structuring textual material--information mapping and programmed instruction--on the basis of their ability to facilitate recall and subsequent retrieval of information by college students enrolled in an introductory media course. (Author)

Levy, Kenneth J. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1978
Monte Carlo techniques were employed to compare the familiar F-test with Welch's V-test procedure for testing hypotheses concerning a priori contrasts among K treatments. The two procedures were compared under homogeneous and heterogeneous variance conditions. (Author)

Bear – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1977
The hypothesis that alpha brain wave biofeedback training elevates mood was tested. Three groups of eight naive subjects each were formed: Group 1 underwent training, Group 2 kept the alpha feedback signal off, and Group 3 named titles of tunes. The hypothesis was not supported. (Author)
