Harwell, Michael R. – Educational Research Quarterly, 1988
Multivariate and univariate analysis of variance methods (MANOVA and ANOVA, respectively) are compared for their relative value in educational research. The favoritism shown multivariate techniques is questioned. Criteria for the selection of the appropriate technique are outlined. The relationships among research hypotheses, statistical…

Knudson, Ruth E. – Journal of Educational Research, 1988
Findings from a study which compared writing produced by 137 elementary students exposed to different levels of substantive facilitation (teacher-led pre-writing activities) indicate that less substantive facilitation resulted in superior writing, while increased substantive facilitation produced mechanical fill-in-the-blank responses. (IAH)

Willett, Peter – Information Processing and Management, 1988
Reviews recent research into the use of hierarchic agglomerative clustering methods for document retrieval. The topics discussed include the calculation of interdocument similarities, algorithms used to implement clustering methods on large databases, validity testing of document hierarchies, appropriate search strategies, and other applications…

Hambleton, Ronald K.; Jones, Russell W. – Educational Research Quarterly, 1994
A judgmental method for determining item bias was applied to test data from 2,000 Native American and 2,000 Anglo-American students for a statewide proficiency test. Results indicated some shortcomings of the judgmental method but supported the use of cross-validation in empirically identifying potential bias. (SLD)

Gery, Gloria – Performance Improvement Quarterly, 1995
Examines attributes, characteristics, and behaviors of performance-centered software packages that are emerging in the consumer software marketplace and compares them with large-scale systems software being designed by internal information systems staffs and vendors of large-scale software designed for financial, manufacturing, processing, and…

Hough, Susan L.; Hall, Bruce W. – Journal of Educational Research, 1994
Compares results of Hunter-Schmidt meta-analytic technique with results of Glass meta-analytic technique on three meta-analytic data sets chosen from the literature, hypothesizing that the Hunter-Schmidt mean effect size would be significantly larger than the Glass mean effect size because of correlation for measurement error. Results confirmed…

Keselman, H. J.; And Others – Psychometrika, 1995
This paper explains how to obtain generally robust and powerful analyses with any of the recommended nonorthogonal solutions by adapting a modification of the Welch-James procedure for comparing means when population variances are heterogeneous. Results from a Monte Carlo study support use of the procedure. (SLD)

Hall, Judith A.; Rosenthal, Robert – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1995
Some guidelines are offered for interpreting and evaluating meta-analytic reviews of research. The choice of unit of analysis, the issue of fixed versus random effects, the meaning of heterogeneity, the determination of appropriate contrasts, and the choice of measures of central tendency are discussed. (SLD)

Richards, Trevor – Computers in Libraries, 1995
Presents the results of a comparative evaluation of four CD-ROM retrieval software packages using the Revised Richards-Brown CD-ROM Software Evaluation Model. CD Answer, SPIRS, KAware2, and ROMware are evaluated, and results indicate that SPIRS and CD Answer are the favored packages. (LRW)

Ralston, Steven M. – Journal of Business and Technical Communication, 1995
Examines two methods of conducting an employment interviewing training exercise for interviewees. Compares instructor-facilitated and peer-facilitated exercises specifically. Discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each. Concludes that instructor-facilitated training was preferred over peer-facilitated training, and suggests directions for…

Karsh, Kathryn G.; And Others – Research in Developmental Disabilities, 1990
Six persons, ages 17-20, with moderate mental retardation were taught to identify 3 words by each of 2 different procedures--a fading procedure called the Task Demonstration Model and the Standard Prompting Hierarchy. The Task Demonstration Model produced fewer errors in acquisition, generalization, and maintenance. (Author/JDD)

Breckler, Steven J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1994
A graphical method is introduced to help identify important properties of an ambivalence index. When five ambivalence indexes were compared in this way, only two were found satisfactory. Comparison of the same indexes with ratings of 445 college students of 26 attitude topics found relatively small empirical differences among the indexes. (SLD)

Keselman, H. J. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1994
Six stepwise multiple-comparison procedures for repeated-measures means were compared for their overall familywise rates of Type I error when multisample sphericity and multivariate normality were not satisfied. Robust stepwise procedures were identified by Keselman, Keselman, and Shaffer (1991) with respect to three definitions of power. (SLD)

Kendall, Sharon Dubble – NAMTA Journal, 1993
Examined the nature and degree of autonomous behavior among groups of elementary students from Montessori schools and from traditional public schools. Results indicated that Montessori students demonstrated higher levels of independence, initiative, and self-regulation than students from traditional schools. (PAM)
