Senior medical students have originated and taught an elective course in physical diagnosis to entering students at Stanford since 1971. This study tested the ability of these first-year students against that of students taking the traditional faculty-taught course. In a physical education course children were given assignments alternating between athletic competition and individually solving problems on how they would use their bodies to accomplish assigned physical activities; it was found that they enjoyed problem solving at least as much, if not more than, competition. Undergraduates (N = 96), divided into 12 groups, first engaged in self-disclosure and consensus exercises and then were required to exchange personal feedback.
