Combs, Julie P.; Clark, David; Moore, George W.; Onwuegbuzie, Anthony J.; Edmonson, Stacey L.; Slate, John R. – Current Issues in Education, 2011
Few researchers have addressed student achievement outcomes as a function of grade configurations for older elementary-aged students. Thus, this study was designed to determine differences between students' Grade 5 reading and mathematics achievement in elementary schools (K-5) as compared to intermediate schools (Grade 5, 5-6) for 5 academic…

Bauserman, Deborah N.; Obrzut, John E. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
Elaborative rehearsal strategies rather than nonelaborative rehearsal strategies (repetition only) discriminated between the two groups of fifth and sixth graders. The organizational ability represented in elaborative rehearsal strategies was the hypothesized mechanism responsible for the better long-term memory and total recall observed in…

Rosenbach, John H.; Rusch, Reuben R. – Psychology in the Schools, 1991
Administered 1930s version of Pintner General Ability Tests: Verbal Series to 138 fifth grade students. Compared to scores from current intelligence and achievement tests, Pintner means were similar. Correlations of Pintner with other tests were of same order as those typically reported among contemporary measures. Item difficulty appeared similar…

Campbell, N. Jo – 1986
This study reports the preliminary results of a research project that focuses on the development of an abbreviated measure of computer anxiety, the Computer Anxiety Scale (CAS)-Short Form (SF), designed for use with upper elementary and secondary school students. The subjects involved in the study included 1075 students in grades 4 through 12,…

Stokes, Elizabeth H.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1978
The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, and the revised form of that measure, were administered to a sample of sixth grade pupils. Although the correlation between measures was high, scores on the revised form were significantly lower. (JKS)

Marjoram, D. T. E. – Education 3-13, 1978
Because of student characteristics in the middle years, several types of assessment are needed. The national monitoring system being developed by the Assessment of Performance Unit (APU) may prove a useful assessment framework for individual schools, providing developmental data for program comparisons and student movement between schools. (SJL)

Pedriana, Anthony J.; Bracken, Bruce A. – Psychology in the Schools, 1982
Compared the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R) for 31 gifted children. The sample mean for the PPVT-R was significantly lower than for the PPVT. Additionally, the PPVT and PPVT-R correlated to a significant degree, yielding a standard score correlation coefficient of .83. (Author)

Rasp, Alfred, Jr.; Stiles, Richard – 1976
A report is given on two years' experience in using the Anchor Test Study (ATS) norms, developed by the Educational Testing Service under contract to the U.S. Office of Education as part of the Washington State Assessment program. In the first year, the desire to develop a state reading achievement profile through the application of the ATS norm…

Naglieri, Jack A.; Jensen, Arthur R. – Intelligence, 1987
The Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) and the Wechsler Intelligence for Children-Revised (WISC-R) were compared with respect to the magnitudes of the average White-Black differences in standardized scaled scores and in raw scores. Subjects were 172 fourth- and fifth-grade children matched in Black-White pairs. (Author/LMO)

Schwartz, Michael; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1982
Compared the Matching Familiar Figures Test performances of 53 children in grades five and six, identified as being depressed, to performances of 53 nondepressed children. The depressed group had longer latencies, made more errors, and was less efficient, even when intellectual differences were taken into account. (Author)

Raviv, Amiram; And Others – American Educational Research Journal, 1990
Teachers' (n=78) and students' (n=2,347) perceptions of actual and preferred classroom environments were compared in 78 sixth grade classes in 43 schools in Israel. The Classroom Environment Scale was administered to all of the subjects. Teachers and students agreed more about the ideal than the real classroom. (SLD)

Waters, Theresa Z. – 1996
A study examined the effect of geographic mobility on elementary school students' achievement. Although such mobility, which requires students to make multiple moves among schools, can have a negative impact on academic achievement, the hypothesis for the study was that it was not a determining factor in reading achievement test scores. Subjects…

Swanson, H. Lee – Intelligence, 1993
Models of working memory were compared in 2 experiments as means of explaining variance in the comprehension of 95 skilled and 80 learning-disabled readers from grades 4 through 7. Results suggest that learning-disabled children's working memory problems are functionally related to higher order processes and not memory alone. (SLD)

D'Alessio, Judith A. – 1996
A study examined retelling as a reading comprehension-enhancing technique. Subjects were 26 urban, lower socio-economic fourth graders from New Jersey (Essex County), including 10 girls and 16 boys. A control sample answered questions as a follow-up to reading basal stories; an experimental sample retold the stories as a follow-up. Comparable…
