Balancing Innovation and Integrity: An Emerging Technology Report on SciSpace in Academic Writing

Research shows that students often struggle with understanding complex academic texts, conducting comprehensive literature reviews, and adhering to the precise requirements of academic writing. One emerging tool that has the potential to address these challenges is SciSpace, an AI-powered platform designed to enhance the academic writing process through features that support reading comprehension, writing improvement, and citation management. However, its full potential is not always realized due to a lack of understanding of how to use these tools responsibly and effectively. This emerging technology report aims to close this knowledge gap, address concerns, and promote the responsible use of SciSpace within the academic community. The paper first provides a detailed overview of SciSpace's features, highlighting their relevance for learning, instruction, and assessment in academic writing. This is followed by a review of empirical studies illustrating how SciSpace has been applied in academic contexts. The paper concludes by discussing the significant challenges of using SciSpace, particularly the risks of over-reliance and ethical concerns, and offers recommendations for balancing innovation with academic integrity.
