Winkler, Clifford E. – Nat Sch, 1970
Recommends cooperative purchasing and the use of mark sense card readers to enable schools to afford the best computers available for use in classroom work. (JF)

Seidel, Robert J. – 1980
This paper provides an evaluative framework to clarify the similarities and differences in five purposes for which a computer may be used to aid instruction. Each purpose implies its own method of evaluation and each has a different set of effectiveness measures that highlight its unique value. The first four involve adding new skills or knowledge…

Schofer, J. P. – Research Bulletin, 1974
It is best to keep the academic computing program separate from the data management problemsolving required by educational, administrative, and business activities. Educational value and real cost effectiveness should be used in and out of the educational system. (Author/DN)

Stone, Maureen – 1977
This paper presents a study on the effects of various data compression methods from the viewpoint of central computer to terminal communications on a large graphics oriented timesharing system, PLATO IV. The desired goal is to increase terminal display speed without significant increase in the transmission error rates. While the major emphasis in…

O'Donovan, Eamonn – Technology & Learning, 2000
Describes thin clients as low-cost personal computers that lack hardware features and run applications off of a school's central server or via an application service provider on the Internet. Discusses advantages, including being easy to use, easy to manage, and less costly to service; and considers possible problems. (LRW)

Caldwell, Robert M. – 1981
The educational problems of the United States have reached critical proportions, particularly if the nation is to maintain leadership in high technology industries. This document explores the promise technology offers for improving instruction and broadening alternatives for instructional delivery. The author considers how technologically assisted…

Floyd, Steve – Training and Development Journal, 1980
Using a computer for interactive training opens up a whole new range of capabilities which would otherwise be prohibitively expensive. This article reviews procedures for developing programs and introduces ideas for exploration. (JOW)

Levin, Henry M.; Woo, Louis – Economics of Education Review, 1981
Experimental cost data based on 1977-78 federal funding showed schools could afford up to three daily 10-minute sessions per student of computer assisted instruction (CAI) in compensatory education. A more advanced CAI system yielded costs in the same range. Computer sharing between schools increased CAI costs per session. (Author/RW)

Zenaty, Jayne W.; And Others – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1979
Describes a minicomputer software system for the administration of instructional programs combining interactive cable television and computer aided instruction for potentially large populations at relatively low cost. Both basic two-way cable television technology and the system developed by Michigan State University are discussed. (Author)

Wilson, Stanley; Billingsley, Ray – 1971
This computer program is designed to optimize a Cobb-Douglas type of production function. The user of this program may choose isoquants and/or the expansion path for a Cobb-Douglas type of production function with up to nine resources. An expansion path is the combination of quantities of each resource that minimizes the cost at each production…

Levin, Dan – American School Board Journal, 1982
In this Illinois district, the superintendent has set a goal of universal computer literacy; to accomplish it, he spent $250,000 for 220 microcomputers to serve both staff and students. (Author/JM)

Himwich, H. A. – 1977
The goal of this investigation was to find a method of reducing revision time and improving instruction in some 370 extension courses taken by airmen while on the job to upgrade their training. The goal of the pilot project was to determine which of two systems--TICCIT or PLATO--was sufficiently more attractive than textbooks to justify exploring…

Warlick, Charles H. – 1973
The University of Texas is heavily involved with computers in instruction. The computation center, with a Control Data 6600 and 6400, has a great number of course programs and a high usage level. With the NSF a southwest regional computer network was established to share in these programs, and there are 23 institutions currently involved. It is…
