Beishuizen, Jos; And Others – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1996
This discussion of hypertext focuses on a study of undergraduates that explored the conditions for making hypertext a better environment than a traditional linear text for studying and for an information search. Highlights include the influence of students' learning styles; and the availability of navigation tools. (Author/LRW)

Dias, Paulo; Sousa, Ana Paula – Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, 1997
A study of 22 high school students who used a prototype navigational map for browsing hypermedia documents found that the tool was not effective. Supporting previous research the study found the use of maps resulted in poorer performance, less use of the system, lower perceived control, and poorer development of mental representations. (PEN)

Sims, Rod – Computers in Human Behavior, 1997
This paper promotes further discussion and analysis of interactivity in learning environments and contains a classification of interaction types appropriate for consideration in multimedia settings. Through an examination of related factors associated with navigation and control, a matrix of interactive dimensions is proposed. (Author)

Zumbach, Jorg; Reimann, Peter; Koch, Sabine – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 2001
Describes a study of university students that examined the influences of navigation in hypertext learning environments and discusses advantages and disadvantages of hypertext as instructional media. Discusses active (self-directed) versus passive (pre-sequenced) access; knowledge acquisition; emotional outcomes; and knowledge utilization with a…

Barbieri, Kathy; Mehringer, Susan – 1997
The Virtual Workshop is a World Wide Web-based set of modules on high performance computing developed at the Cornell Theory Center (CTC) (New York). This approach reaches a large audience, leverages staff effort, and poses challenges for developing interesting presentation techniques. This paper describes the following techniques with their…

Stoney, Sue; McMahon, Mark – 1998
This paper reports on a project at Edith Cowan University (Australia) in which a multidisciplinary team designed and created a self-paced learning environment for students to learn about share valuation and investment, with a focus on the inclusion of features that would motivate students to use and engage with the program. The resultant program,…

Boegh, Jorgen; Krebs, Allan M.; Petersen, Lars O.; Wagner, M. – 1998
This paper describes a tele-educational environment and reports on experiences obtained during international trials. The tele-educational environment is built around the metaphor of a college. The virtual college offers the opportunity for students to participate in desktop tele-education from their homes or offices. The environment is based on…

Specht, Marcus – 1998
Empirical evaluations of learning with hypertext have shown contradictory results. Adaptive hypertext was introduced to solve some problems when learning with hypertext. This paper reports on two empirical studies comparing different forms of adaptive hypertext. In the first experiment, four treatments were realized by a combination of adaptive…

Lawless, Kimberly A.; Brown, Scott W.; Mills, Robert – 1998
This paper describes a study undertaken to examine how four variables (domain knowledge, topic knowledge, individual interest, and situational interest) impact recall of information from a hypertext environment. Participants in the study were 107 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the School of Education at a large northeastern…

Lautenbacher, Glenn E.; Mahling, Dirk E. – 1997
This paper presents interface guidelines from research at the University of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) School of Information Sciences in developing a collaborative, problem-based learning environment for the World Wide Web. The lessons learned are based on student use and evaluation of three interface prototypes over the course of 3 years and…

Lohr, Linda – 1998
Modeling the functions of a teacher in a computer interface is not a new practice; most computer applications employ electronic performance support systems (EPSS) such as online help, wizards, coaches, and even some forms of artificial intelligence. This paper presents easy-to-implement strategies for increasing learner autonomy by embedding…

Neumann, Gustaf; Zirvas, Jana – 1998
This paper describes the architecture and discusses implementation issues of a scalable Internet-based teaching and learning system (SKILL) being developed at the University of Essen (Germany). The primary objective of SKILL is to cope with the different knowledge levels and learning preferences of the students, providing them with a collaborative…

Neumann, Gaby; Ziems, Dietrich; Hopner, Christian – 1998
This paper introduces a multimedia-based educational system on logistics developed at the University of Magdeburg (Germany), reports on development and implementation of the prototype, and discusses ideas for redesign. The system was tested, used, and evaluated at the university and within a European network of 24 universities, colleges, and…

Giroux, Sylvain; Hotte, Richard; Dao, Kim – 1997
This paper presents a framework for producing learning environments (LEs) on the World Wide Web that improves productivity and quality at a reduced cost for both designers and learners. The resulting LEs are germane to fractals. Changes in scale are likened to levels in LEs; each level expresses a given viewpoint on knowledge. Self-similarity…
