Bergstrom, Betty A.; Lunz, Mary E. – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1992
The level of confidence in pass/fail decisions obtained with computerized adaptive tests and paper-and-pencil tests was greater for 645 medical technology students when the computer adaptive test implemented a 90 percent confidence stopping rule than for paper-and-pencil tests of comparable length. (SLD)

Okonkwo, Charity Akuadi – Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education, 2010
This paper first presents an overview of the concepts of assessment and evaluation in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) environment. The large numbers of students and numerous courses make assessment and evaluation very difficult and administrative nightmare at Distance Learning (DL) institutions. These challenges informed exploring issues relating…

Agar-Jacobsen, Roberta J. – ProQuest LLC, 2010
The primary goal of this study was to examine the relationship between deaf and hard-of-hearing students' learning style preferences and compare them to their nondeaf peers. Specifically, this study used 90 students throughout western Washington State, 45 per group. Quantitative data were collected using the 104-question survey Learning Style…

Florian, Timothy P. – ProQuest LLC, 2010
Critical thinking is a skill that school systems are trying to develop in their student populations. Numerous studies have been conducted on developing critical thinking skills such as self-regulation, interpretation, and analysis. However, available data on the use of learning management systems (LMS) as a means to develop critical-thinking…

Garcia Laborda, Jesus; Magal Royo, Teresa; Bakieva, Margarita – Online Submission, 2010
This paper investigates whether students would be reluctant to do the oral tasks of the Computer Based University Entrance Examination (P.A.U.) in Spain. So far in the Spanish history of education never a foreign language high stakes task has been included in any of the versions of the P.A.U. 60 students took the oral task of the P.A.U. which…

Schaal, Steffen; Bogner, Franz X.; Girwidz, Raimund – Research in Science Education, 2010
Acquisition of conceptual knowledge is a central aim in science education. In this study we monitored an interdisciplinary hypermedia assisted learning unit on hibernation and thermodynamics based on cooperative learning. We used concept mapping for the assessment, applying a pre-test/post-test design. In our study, 106 9th graders cooperated by…

Li, Mao-Neng Fred; Yang, Der-Ching – School Science and Mathematics, 2010
To investigate the structure of number sense and then to assess its uses in fifth-grade children's number sense development, a computerized number sense scale was developed and evaluated. The findings of the study indicate that the newly developed scale, with four dominant factors identified and reconfirmed, is internally consistent and…

Bennett, Randy Elliot; Persky, Hilary; Weiss, Andy; Jenkins, Frank – Journal of Technology, Learning, and Assessment, 2010
This paper describes a study intended to demonstrate how an emerging skill, problem solving with technology, might be measured in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Two computer-delivered assessment scenarios were designed, one on solving science-related problems through electronic information search and the other on solving…

Meijer, Rob R.; van Krimpen-Stoop, Edith M. L. A. – 2003
In this study a cumulative-sum (CUSUM) procedure from the theory of Statistical Process Control was modified and applied in the context of person-fit analysis in a computerized adaptive testing (CAT) environment. Six person-fit statistics were proposed using the CUSUM procedure, and three of them could be used to investigate the CAT in online test…

Latu, Elisapesi; Chapman, Elaine – British Journal of Educational Technology, 2002
Considers the potential of computer adaptive testing (CAT). Discusses the use of CAT instead of traditional paper and pencil tests, identifies decisions that impact the efficacy of CAT, and concludes that CAT is beneficial when used to its full potential on certain types of tests. (LRW)

Bradlow, Eric T.; Weiss, Robert E. – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 2001
Compares four methods that map outlier statistics to a familiarity probability scale (a "P" value). Explored these methods in the context of computerized adaptive test data from a 1995 nationally administered computerized examination for professionals in the medical industry. (SLD)

van Krimpen-Stoop, Edith M. L. A.; Meijer, Rob R. – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 2001
Proposed person-fit statistics that are designed for use in a computerized adaptive test (CAT) and derived critical values for these statistics using cumulative sum (CUSUM) procedures so that item-score patterns can be classified as fitting or misfitting. Compared nominal Type I errors with empirical Type I errors through simulation studies. (SLD)

Roberts, James S.; Lin, Yan; Laughlin, James E. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2001
Examined the use of the generalized graded unfolding model (GGUM) in computerized adaptive testing, using simulation and attempting to minimize the number of items required to produce equiprecise estimates of person locations. Results suggest that adaptive testing with the GGUM is a good method for achieving estimates with an approximately uniform…

Dijkstra, Jacob; Van Assen, Marcel A. L. M. – Social Psychology Quarterly, 2008
We investigated the consequences for exchange outcomes of the violation of an assumption underlying most social psychological research on exchange. This assumption is that the negotiated direct exchange of commodities between two actors (pure exchange) can be validly represented as two actors splitting a fixed pool of resources (split pool…
