Eighty graduate students and faculty estimated the correlation coefficient for each of 13 computer-printed scatterplots. As predicted, subjects underestimated the degree of actual correlation. A battery of Graphic Information Processing Tests (GRIP) was developed to utilize the display characteristics of computer terminals in measuring abilities important for processing visually presented information.
