Milici, Pietro; Plantevin, Frédérique; Salvi, Massimo – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2022
We propose an original machine that traces conics and some transcendental curves (oblique trajectories of confocal conics) by the solution of inverse tangent problems. For such a machine, we also provide the 3D-printable model to be used as an intriguing supplement for geometry, calculus, or ordinary differential equations classes.

Bernard, Pawel; Mendez, James D. – Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, 2020
Development of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has started a new chapter for in-classroom modeling of chemical molecules. The technology provides the opportunity to design and produce various types of personalized models. However, using classical 3D printers is time consuming, and it is hard to involve students in the modeling process…

Yu-Hui Ching; Sasha Wang; Min Long – TechTrends: Linking Research and Practice to Improve Learning, 2025
This study explored pre-service teachers' perceptions of a 3D printing integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) module within a college-level mathematics content course. Data from surveys and reflections collected from nineteen participants were analyzed. Results indicated that the pre-service teachers perceived…

Roy, George J.; Cunningham, Matthew; Rafanan, Kenneth – Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, 2023
In this article, the authors explain how they leveraged the popularity of the "Star Wars" franchise to introduce a task steeped in popular culture as a fun way to engage their students in investigating complex mathematics that have real-life connections to careers in toy design and engineering design in general. The authors share various…

Hsu, Yi Chen – EURASIA Journal of Mathematics, Science and Technology Education, 2021
This study examines the integration of virtual reality (VR) information technology in the teaching of systems of linear equations in three variables in a high school mathematics class. More broadly, the study investigates the effectiveness of digital teaching with respect to the learning process. The study tests two auxiliary teaching systems: a…

Pielsticker, Felicitas – International Electronic Journal of Mathematics Education, 2021
The paper addresses concept formation processes of a student in the field of geometry. More precisely, the paper deals with the question of how to assist a student in a mathematical concept formation process -- in the context of area calculations in triangles -- with a specially designed learning environment based on the usage of 3D printed…

Paul, Stepan – PRIMUS, 2018
As three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is fast becoming more affordable and accessible, calculus instructors can now consider using 3D printing and 3D printed models to actively engage students in core concepts relating to objects in R[superscript 3]. This article describes three lessons for a multivariable calculus class in which students…

de Cataldo, Riccardo; Griffith, Kaitlyn M.; Fogarty, Keir H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2018
Introductory chemistry students encounter the concept of hybrid orbitals as a transition from atomic orbitals to molecular bonding. The principal purpose of learning hybridization in the undergraduate curriculum is to impart an understanding of the origins of molecular bonding and geometry. Physical models of both individual hybrid orbitals and…

Du, Xuejiao; Zhang, Qi – Educational Psychology, 2019
Previous research has verified the benefits obtained when learners trace out worked examples with the index finger. Our study conducted two experiments to explore the reasons for this phenomenon and its generalizability. Experiment 1 compared the learning effects among tracing, non-tracing, and cueing methods. The cueing method was included to…

Cochran, Jill A.; Cochran, Zane; Laney, Kendra; Dean, Mandi – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 2016
With the rise of personal desktop 3D printing, a wide spectrum of educational opportunities has become available for educators to leverage this technology in their classrooms. Until recently, the ability to create physical 3D models was well beyond the scope, skill, and budget of many schools. However, since desktop 3D printers have become readily…

Krueger, Thomas J.; Barr, Ronald E. – Engineering Design Graphics Journal, 2007
Engineering design graphics education has come a long way in the past two decades. The emergence of solid geometric modeling technology has become the focal point for the graphical development of engineering design ideas. The main attraction of this 3-D modeling approach is the downstream application of the data base to analysis and…

Anderson, Nancy Canavan; Gavin, M. Katherine; Dailey, Judith; Stone, Walter; Vuolo, Janice – National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2005
This book follows students' natural progression from measuring with informal or nonstandard units to using standard units to measure such attributes as length, weight, angle, and temperature. Activities extend students' learning to the measurement of two- and three-dimensional objects. Students work in a variety of lively real-world contexts,…
