Interdisciplinary Communication Development in Pre-Licensure Nursing Students Using the TeamSTEPPS® Model and Simulation to Improve Communication Attitudes

Developing interdisciplinary communication and leadership skills is considered a priority in nursing education. Nurse burnout, nurse turnover rates, patient safety issues, and sentinel events can all be associated with communication and leadership deficiencies in nursing practice. Recent literature has shown the impact of developing nontechnical skills in nursing education, before independent practice, to overcome the adverse consequences related to interdisciplinary communication and team leadership practices. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to determine the benefits of implementing a simulation using the TeamSTEPPS® curriculum in pre-licensure nursing education by analyzing the development of interdisciplinary team leadership skills and attitudes towards communication. The QI project utilized a quantitative quasi-experimental design to investigate how, over time, attitudes and behaviors developed associated with communication and leadership skills. Multiple tools were used to analyze the development of communication and leadership skills, which measured the project aims and outcomes. Participants completed pre- and post- tests and were scored using a behavioral tool to identify areas of growth before and after the intervention phase of the project. The intervention phase included the presentation of the TeamSTEPPS® content through online instructive learning, simulation, and clinical practice. The project took place over 6 weeks and results in communication and leadership attitudes showed slight improvement, while the observational assessment of communication and leadership skills revealed much improvement. Barriers of the QI project were identified and a sustainability plan was recognized for future project plans.
