Information Privacy Concerns of Indian Undergraduate Students and Their Willingness to Provide Personal Information to Transact on the Internet

ProQuest LLC, D.B.A. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
This quantitative, cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between the concern for information privacy (CFIP) of Indian undergraduate students and their willingness to provide personal information to transact on the Internet (PPIT). The study also examined the mediating effects of internet trust and perceived internet privacy risk on the relationship between CFIP and PPIT. This study replicates a Nigerian study (Odeyinde, 2013) and utilizes two extensively validated survey instruments: the concern for information privacy instrument (Smith et al., 1996), and the extended privacy calculus model for e-commerce transactions instrument (Dinev & Hart, 2006). The population for this study was Indian undergraduate students, and the sample frame was undergraduate students from St. Joseph's College Autonomous, Bengaluru, India. A total of 270 undergraduate students responded to the survey. The results of the analysis were contrary to the literature. In particular, no support was found for the hypothesized negative relationship between concern for information privacy and the willingness to provide personal information to transact on the Internet. Additionally, no support was found for internet trust and perceived internet privacy risk as potential mediators of the direct relationship between concern for information privacy and the willingness to provide personal information to transact on the Internet. One-to-one interviews were conducted to further understand the reasons behind the contrary results. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
