Wells, Donald A.; And Others
Elementary Economist, v6 n3 1984-85
This issue begins with a conceptual introduction to economic specialization, exports and imports, and the importance of international trade. Four instructional units follow this introduction, beginning with a preschool and kindergarten unit called "Traders and Travelers," which involves young students in five activities that illustrate our international economy. In the first and second grade unit, students play the parachute toss game to illustrate cooperation and engage in five other activities designed to show the benefits of international economic specialization. "It's a Small World," the unit for third and fourth grade, asks students to use bartering, investigate the nature of money, and conduct a research project to help them understand why countries need each other. The last unit, called "Islands of Trade," offers fifth and sixth grade students five activities centered around student-built imaginary island nations with specialized economies. (JDH)
