A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Bias toward Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexuals among College Students Majoring in Human Services
McGuigan, William M.
College Student Journal, v52 n3 p309-314 Fall 2018
A disappointingly high level of bias toward gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) individuals has been recognized in the general population. The U.S. Department of Justice (2013) confirmed 20.8% of hate crimes reported to police in 2013 were founded on bias toward perceived sexual orientation. A recent Gallup Poll reported that 4.1% of the US population, about 10 million Americans, identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender (Gates, 2017). The magnitude of these national statistics establishes the importance of addressing GLB bias. This is especially true for students majoring in human service careers (social work, human development, applied psychology and community sociology) since this bias has also been found among human service professionals (Chonody, Rutledge, & Siebert, 2009).
