Teng Wang; Jingjing Liu – Journal of Chemical Education, 2023
A model kit consisting of magnetic rods and steel balls, which is generally sold as a desktop toy, has been utilized to construct physical models for teaching packing arrangements of metallic crystal. All four basic metallic crystal structure models are easily constructed layer by layer, and corresponding unit cells can be naturally derived from…

Campbell, Dean J.; Staiger, Felicia A.; Jujjavarapu, Chaitanya N. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2015
The whoosh bottle rocket car has been redesigned to be more reusable and more robust, making it even easier to use as a demonstration. Enhancements of this demonstration, including the use of heat sensitive ink and electronic temperature probes, enable users to find warmer and cooler regions on the surface of the whoosh bottle.

Teerasong, Saowapak; McClain, Robert L. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2011
We have developed an undergraduate laboratory activity to introduce students to microfluidics. In the activity, each student constructs their own microfluidic device using simple photolithographic techniques and then uses the device to separate a food dye mixture by electrophoresis. Dyes are used so that students are able to visually observe the…

Sims, Paul A.; O'Mealey, Gary B.; Khan, Nabeel A.; Larabee, Chelsea M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2011
A design for a simple and inexpensive gradient maker is described. The gradient maker is assembled by (i) cutting the tops off two plastic bottles of differing diameters to produce two cylinders with intact bottoms; (ii) drilling a small hole toward the bottom of the smaller diameter cylinder and plugging the hole with a size 00 cork stopper; and…

Tang, Yijun; Zeng, Xiangqun; Liang, Jennifer – Journal of Chemical Education, 2010
Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has become an important optical biosensing technology in the areas of biochemistry, biology, and medical sciences because of its real-time, label-free, and noninvasive nature. The high cost of commercial devices and consumables has prevented SPR from being introduced in the undergraduate laboratory. Here, we present…
