Matching Needs of Gifted Learners to School Possibilities
Rogers, Karen B.
Understanding Our Gifted, v19 n2 p15-20 Win 2007
"Re-forming Gifted Education" (Rogers, 2002) offers "best practices" for gifted students. The book also includes a procedure for developing a child's education plan with a variety of choices. Nevertheless, in recent years, the author has often been asked "how" one can ensure that the "best" matches are made for a child. A parent or teacher may collect all the data suggested and understand all the research-based options that should be provided, yet still be uncertain about whether or not the plan developed is really the best match for the student. Since every school will not offer every one of the options listed in the book, one should choose the best matches from those that are offered. Often, priorities must be set. Parents and educators may start with one possible strategy, see how that goes, and then eventually move on to a second, third, and even fourth priority. This article discusses the best method for choosing the most important strategies to use with a gifted child. These strategies should be prioritized as follows: (1) Grouping within and outside of school; (2) Compacting or accelerating the regular curriculum; (3) Providing opportunities for individual learning; and (4) Providing appropriate learning experiences in school.
