We begin this essay by sharing a bit about our entry points into Black, Indigenous, and Afro-Indigenous feminist solidarities before entering into conversation with Mikki Kendall whose work Hood Feminisms: Notes from the Women that a Movement Forgot inspired the title for this essay and offers important insights for Black and Indigenous feminist…

Hampton, Rosalind; Hartman, Michelle – Curriculum Inquiry, 2022
This coauthored article is about building solidarity on Canadian university campuses. We construct a narrative in two registers--one justified left, one justified right--that traces our activism within and beyond the university and how our own solidarity has grown over time and informs our current research collaboration. On the one (left) hand, we…

Sankofa, S. Divine; Muñoz, Natalie; Philippe, Deanna; Genao, Soribel; Rodríguez, Cristóbal – Multicultural Learning and Teaching, 2022
Amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the disparities of healthcare for Black and Brown communities, the tragic and senseless deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Rashard Brooks took place before we were halfway into 2020. Furthermore, while Black deaths at the hands of police are the highest rate…

Houston, Serin D.; Lange, Kirk – Journal of Geography in Higher Education, 2018
This article illustrates how "global/local" community engagement, a particular form of experiential learning and political work that draws upon geography conceptually, pedagogically, and programmatically, is well suited to advance integrative learning and invite students into social action. Through specific examples from Mount Holyoke…

Hawdon, James; Ryan, John – Social Forces, 2011
Numerous researchers discuss the solidarity-producing effects of crime, natural disasters and mass tragedies; however, there is much we do not understand about the processes involved in the phenomena. We specify the social relationships that "generate" and "sustain" solidarity by building on Hunter's descriptions of the…

Parks, Craig D.; Hulbert, Lorne G. – Journal of Conflict Resolution, 1995
Tests the hypothesis that an individual's degree of trust influences the extent to which that individual reacts to the presence of fear in a pay-off matrix. Results indicate that when fear is present, high trusters cooperated more frequently than low trusters. When fear is absent, both groups cooperate at the same rate. (JPS)

Napier, Rod; Sanaghan, Patrick – Business Officer, 2002
Uses the example of Vermont's Middlebury College to explore the challenges and possibilities of achieving consensus about institutional change. Discusses why, unlike in this example, consensus usually fails, and presents four demands of an effective consensus process. Includes a list of "test" questions on successful collaboration. (EV)

McCall, Jeffrey M. – 1995
At one time communication scholars could go their merry way, secure in the notion that their departments would continue to receive ample funding. However, recent assaults on established and recognized communication departments around the country are more than shots across the bow from administrators and even colleagues from other academic…

Hayden, Shelly R.; And Others – 1983
Research has suggested that people not sharing a common fate lack a sense of group identity, thus decreasing the tendency for helping behavior. To study the effects of stress and commonality of fate on helping behavior, 60 female college students participated in a replication of an earlier study which used male subjects. Participants were assigned…
