The present study is a nationwide survey of study-release programs in the United States. Study-release attempts to bring the inmate back into the community by providing him with educational skills that are important and highly valued in achievement-oriented modern societies. (Author)

Base expectancy rates were used to evaluate the guidelines of a program intended to "shock" youthful first offenders into law-abiding behavior through brief incarceration followed by probation. Data analysis revealed that prior record was the best predictor of reincarceration. (Author/CS)
