As an aid to therapists who work with inmates with long or life sentences who are mandated to receive treatment, this article attempts to follow an inmate with a life sentence who passed through stages of fear and anger and began to understand that changes were needed if he were ever to have his sentence commuted. Surveyed American prisoner home furloughs covering the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Bureau of Prisons. Found 50 correctional systems had home furlough policies in 1988, compared to 2 systems in 1967, 25 systems in 1971, 44 systems in 1977, and 47 systems in 1979. (Author/ABL)

Six stages of moral development are outlined and the moral development of 16 ex-offenders living in a halfway house is examined. Usable Defining Issues Test profiles obtained from eight subjects suggest that discussion involving moral dilemmas is a fruitful area for counselors to explore with ex-offenders. (NRB)

Investigated the relationship between assessed needs of adult probationers and their degree of risk for failure on probation using four levels of risk and a sample of probationers (N=167).
