ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Dallas Baptist University
School counseling is a dynamic, evolving profession that has shifted throughout the decades to address students' needs in response to societal changes. The American School Counselor Association National Model has been instrumental in outlining the current role of school counselors and the components necessary for comprehensive school counseling programs. The current study examined how the percentage of time counselors spent on academic counseling, career counseling, social-emotional counseling, and non-school counseling duties predicted counselors' performance. In addition, counselor-to-student ratios and its impact on counselors' performance was explored. Counselor performance was gauged by using the Texas School Counselor Evaluation and Support System. The current study was quantitative and utilized regression analyses and descriptive statistics to answer hypotheses as well as gain more knowledge regarding which counseling-related services counselors currently performed and which services counselors would prefer spending more time performing. Results indicated that the amount of time counselors spent on social-emotional counseling and non-school counseling duties significantly impacted counselors' performance as measured by the Texas School Counselor Evaluation and Support System. Implications and recommendations were explored and suggested based on the findings from the study. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
