An attempt to attain various high level aims such as "training the mind,""developing judgment," and "achieving independence" within the framework of a first-year physics laboratory course is described. A numeracy course to help art students at the University of Sheffield (England) develop a more positive attitude toward numbers and deal with numerical work of the type they might find in employment, e.g., interpreting quantitative information, is described and evaluated. There were improvements in all areas tested. (RM)

The introduction of increased involvement and participation of students in the learning process in communication courses at Heriot-Watt University is described.
