Casella, Vicki – Instructor, 1985
Teachers are using computer programs in conjunction with many classroom staples such as art supplies, math manipulatives, and science reference books. Twelve software programs and related activities are described which teach visual and auditory memory and spatial relations, as well as subject areas such as anatomy and geography. (MT)

Bangert-Drowns, Robert L.; Pyke, Curtis – Educational Technology Research and Development, 2002
Discusses students' learning engagement and describes a study that investigated whether teachers could accurately judge elementary school students' learning engagement with educational software. Explains teacher's use of a seven-level taxonomy to rate the frequency of different forms of engagement among 42 students interacting with different types…

Block, Gerald H. – Academic Therapy, 1987
"Thinking Networks" a computer based (Apple II) reading writing curriculum is reviewed favorably for its holistic approach to reading, program sequence and presentation, educational intent and content, and teacher's guide. (DB)

Weisgerber, Robert A.; Rubin, David P. – Journal of Reading, Writing, and Learning Disabilities International, 1985
Basic principles of effective software implementation with learning disabled students are discussed. A prototype software package is described that is specifically designed to help develop discriminatory skills in recognizing letter shapes and letter combinations. (JW)

Palmer, John T.; And Others – Journal of Reading, Writing, and Learning Disabilities International, 1985
Practical guidelines are offered to help the teacher integrate microcomputers into a resource room environment for learning disabled students. The author lists basic software packages that are reported to provide proven "starter paks" in language, reading, and mathematics at specified grade levels. (JW)

Brunner, Cornelia – 1990
This report discusses the design of the Macintosh version of INQUIRE, a software package developed to support the processes and activities of inquiry learning and teaching. It is noted that the design challenge was to encourage students to consider information from a variety of perspectives, to make and articulate conceptual connections between…

Jones, Kathryn M.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1987
A new computer assisted instructional program designed to increase decoding fluency in reading was evaluated for use with 20 learning disabled elementary grade children. After 10 weeks of daily 15-minute practice sessions, subjects showed substantial improvement on words practiced, words never practiced, and reading speed and accuracy. (Author/DB)

Honey, Margaret A. – 1990
Noting that formative research on educational computer software has traditionally focused on comprehensibility, appeal, and usefulness, this report argues that these three elements tell us very little about the actual role that the formative researcher plays in the instructional design process. This paper outlines the complexity of the tasks and…

Panagiotakopoulos, Chris T.; Ioannidis, George S. – Computers & Education, 2002
Describes a study that examined the role of the computer with multimedia software in assessing the perception of the basic time concepts by children. Results indicated superiority in children's judgments when multimedia software was used and a positive correlation between age and comprehension. (Author/LRW)

Elliott, Alison – 1989
Observations in Australian classrooms suggest that for most teachers the content and method of curriculum has changed little as a result of the proliferation of new information technologies. In many instances there has been considerable resistance and reluctance to embrace the use of new technologies to support the teaching and learning process.…

MacGregor, S. Kim – Computers in the Schools, 2002
Describes a study of first- and fourth-grade students that explored the relationship between the use of a computer paint program to create visual images and the subsequent verbal expression of these illustrations. Discusses results that compared the use of traditional media with the computer paint program. (Author/LRW)

McWhinnie, Harold J. – 1987
This paper presents some of the results from a course in art and design. The course involved the use of simple computer programs for the arts. Attention was geared to the development of graphic components for educational software. The purpose of the course was to provide, through lectures and extensive hands on experience, a basic introduction to…

Belajthy, Ernest – 1986
Noting that many language arts teachers have rejected tutorial software because of its inability to interact effectively with students, this paper explores implications of artificial intelligence research for human/computer interaction in reading instruction. Limitations of "exact match" curriculum designs in contemporary attempts to provide…
