Barzilay, Amos; Pople, Harry E., Jr. – 1984
SPIRIT is an Intelligent Tutoring System for tutoring probability theory which has evolved through a continuous process of experimentation and tuning. The system manages a unique flexible tutoring style. On one hand, the system may behave as a tutor who mostly observes the student without interference, intervening only when things are really going…

Maclay, Connie M.; Askov, Eunice N. – Lifelong Learning, 1988
Parents of Chapter 1 reading students were invited to take part in a reading program using courseware for adult beginning readers. A group of 52 parents completed the program; on average they gained more than one year in reading level after 20 hours of instructional time. Impact on children and delivery models are discussed. (CH)
Descriptors: Adult Basic Education, Adult Literacy, Computer Assisted Instruction, Courseware
Knezek, Gerald A. – Computing Teacher, 1988
Reviews the historical evolution of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) and discusses recent advances in intelligent systems. Intelligent tutoring systems are described from the system designer's and learner's perspectives, and possible future applications are considered. A list of existing intelligent CAI systems is provided. (14 references) (CLB)

Peer reviewedJones, Kathryn M.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1987
A new computer assisted instructional program designed to increase decoding fluency in reading was evaluated for use with 20 learning disabled elementary grade children. After 10 weeks of daily 15-minute practice sessions, subjects showed substantial improvement on words practiced, words never practiced, and reading speed and accuracy. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Courseware, Decoding (Reading), Elementary Education
Peer reviewedKepner, Henry – Educational Leadership, 1986
Provides an annotated list of suggested readings relating to schools and computers. (MD)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Software, Computers, Courseware
Peer reviewedChoi, Soo-Young – CALICO Journal, 1986
Examines the Component Display Theory and its use in designing a goal-oriented computer-assisted language instruction and in quantifying the effectiveness of the instruction as a preliminary evaluation tool. (SED)

Birchard, Marcy; Dye, Charles; Gordon, John – 2002
With limits on both personnel and time available to conduct effective instruction, the decision is being made increasingly to enhance instructor-led courses with Computer-Based Training (CBT). The effectiveness of this conversion is often unknown and in many cases empirical evaluations are never conducted. This paper describes and discusses the…

Peer reviewedEllsworth, Nancy J. – Journal of Reading, Writing, and Learning Disabilities International, 1990
This article reviews current resources on computer-assisted instruction. Included are sources of software and hardware evaluations, advances in current technology, research, an information hotline, and inventories of available technological assistance. (DB)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Courseware, Elementary Secondary Education, Information Sources
McCarthy, Robert – Electronic Learning, 1989
This overview of the computer industry vendors that supply microcomputer hardware to educators for use in kindergarten through high school focuses on Apple, Tandy, Commodore, and IBM. The use of MS-DOS versus the operating system used in Apple computers is discussed, and pricing and service issues are raised. (LRW)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Networks, Courseware, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedMorrison, Gary R.; And Others – Computers in Human Behavior, 1989
Summarizes the results of five studies dealing with screen design for computer-based instruction (CBI) and provides suggestions for their application as well as future directions for research. Chunking, text density, and screen density are discussed as variables in screen design, and current research is described. (33 references) (LRW)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Courseware, Intermode Differences, Predictor Variables
Bolwell, Christine – Nursing and Health Care, 1988
Although many of the criteria used to evaluate traditional instructional materials can be applied to the instructional aspects of computer-assisted instruction, additional criteria must be considered. These include interactivity, individualized feedback, rapid calculation, graphics, and cost-effectiveness. (JOW)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Software Reviews, Courseware, Evaluation Criteria
Peer reviewedFeyten, Carine M.; Vandeventer, Stephanie S. – Language Quarterly, 1993
A qualitative, holistic framework is presented for the process of evaluating foreign language software. Eleven specific steps are outlined, and a list of educational software evaluation agencies is appended. (Contains 21 references.) (LB)
