The author discusses his experiences teaching in a newly integrated Boston middle school. He relates his encounters with interracial conflicts and various crises in his classroom, and explains methods he used to improve the human relationships in his classroom and to explore racial differences in a constructive manner.

The notion that Indians are curiosities of the past tends to be reinforced in many classrooms, particularly at Thanksgiving. Resource materials and classroom activities are suggested to help dispel myths about Native American culture and history. Concentrating on present-day Indian customs and handicrafts is recommended.
