A Narrative Inquiry on the Cultural Wealth of Hmong Students
Her Saychou, Shimel
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Fresno
This research focuses on exploring the experiences of Hmong students at California State University, Fresno (Fresno State), using qualitative inquiry and Yosso's (2005) Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) model as a framework. The study recognizes the importance of disaggregated data and highlights the need for universities to provide support and resources for specific subgroups within the Asian American population. Through interviews with nine undergraduate Hmong students, the study identifies five major themes, including the types of CCW Hmong students bring to their educational success and how they build CCW on campus. The participants discuss their experiences as Hmong college students, including their struggle in balancing their cultural expectations with American norms and their journey to college. The study finds that Hmong students view obtaining a college degree as an essential means of elevating their place in society and their families. However, they also face challenges in navigating the college system and finding resources available to them, resulting in feelings of loneliness and isolation. The study underscores the importance of creating a supportive and welcoming environment for marginalized students and providing clear communication about available resources to help them succeed in college. The findings may inform university administrators in creating programs and services that better support the success of Hmong students at Fresno State.
