Create Your Own Learning Center.
Mummert, Patricia A.
This document is a descriptive guide for teachers on how to create a learning center cheaply but effectively. The foundational concept of this guide is that teachers are artists who must fashion and highlight the curriculum in such an attractive manner that it becomes most appealing to the child. The materials in the learning center are described as tools the child uses to gain a deeper and broader knowledge of himself and the world around him. Tips are given on how to obtain material cheaply (toy stores and supermarkets are likely sources), how to package them attractively and how to label them. Each learning activity consitutes a single learning task. A worksheet accompanies each learning activity wherever feasible. Descriptions are given of "Primary Math Systems," also designed by the author, which can be used in a classroom learning center. Other topics covered include merchandising the material, storage and retrieval of materials, and student-teacher conferences. Stick figures are used in the text for illustration. (JA)
