Pockets...A Unit Approach to Planning Instruction Related to the State Kindergarten Objectives.
Corley, Rhonda M.; And Others
An addendum to the larger publication entitled "The Kangaroo Book," this document describes a unit approach to planning kindergarten curriculum and offers three sammple units. Exploration of the unit approach includes discussions of topic, concepts, large and small group experiences; descriptions of learning center activities; techniques for communicating with parents; and provision of a process for unit planning, a unit planning format, and a unit evaluation form. The first unit, "My School Is a Special Place," centers on the child's need to be acquainted with the school. The second unit, based on an outstanding children's book, "Where the Wild Things Are," provides a highly interesting central theme related to Halloween. "Signs," the third unit, provides a way of integrating skills in letter recognition and matching as well as safety and general awareness of words and symbols in the child's environment. Integrated into each of the sample units are the 18 kindergarten objectives established by the Basic Skills Assessment Program (BSAP). Research had previously indicated that many students needed additional developmental activities focused on five of the objectives. These five objectives are noted with asterisks to indicate their integration into the units. Also provided are lists of other resource unit topics, suggested books on which to build units, and the 18 BSAP kindergarten objectives, which are briefly explained. (RH)
