Grimson, J. B.; Stacey, G. M. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1974
Two different directory structuring techniques--division hash technique and a hydrid technique--are compared for the same set of keys with directories of from 10,000 to 100,000 unique keys. Retrieval costs, in terms of the number of accesses of secondary storage required to retrieve the keys, are considered in detail. (Author)

Shimko, Ann Helmuth – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1974
Goffman's indirect method and a MeSH tree structure were used to classify a set of 109 medical documents. (PF)

Heaps, H. S.; Schuegraf, E. J. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1975
Describes the advantages of using variable length equifrequent fragments as the language elements for compression coding of large data bases. (Author)

Reardon, Bernard C. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1974
The Retrieval of information by means of freely-chosen descriptors may be handled efficiently by creating an inverted file organization in an adaptive manner, entries in this file being generated by sequential searching of the master file, when required. (Author)

Giroux, Pierre; Khadem, Riaz – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
An English summary is provided for this French article which describes the first stage of a research project using the Bose, Ghosh and Abraham theory with attributes of multiple values applied to a file containing a large number (10 6) of records. (7 references) (Author/SJ)

Lynch, Michael F. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
Substantial degrees of compression of bibliographical data bases result from the application to them of a modified form of run-length coding. (14 references) (Author)

Coaker, Frank W. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1974
Traditional and table-driven methods of editing input data for a data-storage system are compared. An application of table-driven input editing is described for a high-volume, multiple-format, clinical data-base. (Author)

Klingbiel, Paul H. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
The technique for machine-aided indexing developed at the Defense Documentation Center (DDC) is illustrated on a randomly chosen abstract. Additional text is provided in coded form so that the reader can more fully explore this technique. (2 references) (Author)

Chai, D. T. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
The problems of using English for information retrival are delineated. The querying capability of a keyword dialog system is illustrated with actual computer output. Major advantages of this approach are: reduced ambiguity in requests, users may think in smaller functional units, and users may edit previous requests. (7 references) (Author/SJ)

Jonkers, H. Louis – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
A design method for information retrieval systems, based on a modelling technique, and derived from the general objectives and tasks set for the system is described. (12 references) (SJ)

And Others; Lynch, Michael F. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
A high degree of constancy has been found in the microstructure of titles of samples of the INSPEC data base taken over a three-year period. Character and digram frequencies are relatively stable, while variable-length character-strings characterizing samples separated by three years in time show close similarities. Jerome, S. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
SPIN coverage is abnormally low, only 70 journals, versus the coverage of information services in other fields. Every journal listed by SPIN is selectively covered by CAS, resulting in a 76 percent overlap. (3 references) (Author/SJ)

And Others; Borman, Lorraine – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
The social sciences require multiple methods of analysis of information from complex data bases. Data bases have been constructed which contain hierarchical, spatial, and temporal associations among information elements. To provide effective processing capability an integrated approach was taken to facilitate storage and retrieval, statistical…

And Others; Byrne, J. G. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1972
The paper describes TSAR, a current awareness or SDI system which has been developed for processing MARC records in general, but is particularly concerned with the INSPEC service. Some statistics on the frequency of occurrence of words and comments on data compression conclude the paper. (7 references) (Author/SJ)
