Peer reviewedUlijn, Jan – System, 1977
An experiment in second language reading comprehension tested the hypothesis that similar surface and deep structures in L1 and L2 imply a similar means of passing from surface to deep structure. Dutch learners of French were the subjects. (CHK)

Layton, Pamela; Simpson, Adrian J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1975
Subjects read sets of active or passive sentences, and an active or passive question was asked about one. Errors were compared. Results suggest that surface form of a single sentence is retained; surface and deep structures are retained for two, and only deep structures of four and eight sentences. (CHK)

Peer reviewedMiller, John W.; Hosticka, Alice A. – Reading Improvement, 1978
Examines the abilities of 52 fourth graders to recover surface structure from deep structure and to understand logical connectives. Finds that high comprehenders show greater ability than low comprehenders but that the two groups do not differ in ability to understand logical connectives. (RL)

Jurgens, Sister Jeanne Marie – Elementary English, 1972
Focus of the study was to assess linguistic competence as manifested by an ability to recognize ambiguity of three types: lexical, surface structural, and underlying structural. (Author)

Peer reviewedWolff, Dieter – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1987
Discusses a preliminary and sketchy hypothesis of second language comprehension based on empirical investigations into strategies and processes specific to second language comprehension. (Author/CB)

Little, Peter S. – 1975
This study questions the developmental nature of the ability to understand syntactic structures. An exploration is made of the possibility of learning more about reading comprehension and readability by examining responses made to sentences described by transformational grammarians as structurally ambiguous. A group of fifth grade students were…

Bousquet, Robert J. – 1980
Many factors influence the comprehension of a linguistic act by a listener or reader. Some, such as maturity, background, and interests of the decoder are nonlinguistic; others, such as the vocabulary and complexity of the morphological and syntactical structures are linguistic in nature. A review of the literature reveals that while studies have…

Brown, Eric – 1971
Two contrasting theories of reading are reviewed in light of recent research in psycholinguistics. A strictly "visual" model of fluent reading is contrasted with several mediational theories where auditory or articulatory coding is deemed necessary for comprehension. Surveying the research in visual information processing, oral reading,…

Larking, Lewis; Hunter, Robyn – Australian Journal of Reading, 1985
Reports on a study showing that teachers' understanding of learning and the age of children affect children's comprehension styles. (EL)

Story Structure and Age Effects on Children's Ability to Sequence Stories. Technical Report No. 122.
McClure, Erica; Mason, Jana – 1979
To investigate the strategies children use in comprehending written stories, third, sixth, and ninth grade students were given scrambled six-sentence stories and asked to reorder them. Three versions of each of six stories were created. The first version was the canonical form of the story predicted by story grammar rules; the second version began…

Leffert, Beatrice G. – 1976
From the perspective of a reading consultant, the processes of thinking and reading apply to efficient learning. Language teachers should know: (1) the difference between surface structure and deep meaning of an utterance, (2) the importance of "affect" on learning: the reader's personal involvement with the material and with its presentation,…
