Lawson, R. B.; Frey, W. F. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1971
Descriptors: Depth Perception, Discrimination Learning, Distance, Perceptual Development

Johnson, Scott P.; Aslin, Richard N. – Cognitive Development, 1996
Two experiments examined the effects of common motion, background texture, and orientation on four-month olds' perception of unity of a partially occluded rod. Results indicated that infants' perception of object unity is not dependent on a single visual cue but on a variety of cues including motion, interposition, depth cues, background texture,…

Pickens, Jeffrey – Developmental Psychology, 1994
Sixty-four infants viewed side-by-side videotapes of toy trains (in four visual conditions) and listened to sounds at increasing or decreasing amplitude designed to match one of the videos. Results suggested that five-month olds were sensitive to auditory-visual distance relations and that change in size was an important visual depth cue. (MDM)
Descriptors: Auditory Discrimination, Cues, Depth Perception, Distance

Morgan, Michael J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1977
By presenting moving bars of different widths to the two eyes, an attempt was made to model the differential visual persistence produced by differential intensity filtering in the two eyes (the Fertsch-Pulfrich effect). (Editor)
Descriptors: Charts, Depth Perception, Experimental Psychology, Psychological Studies

Montgomery, Noel – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1971
Descriptors: Depth Perception, Discrimination Learning, Figural Aftereffects, Males
Walker, Jearl – Scientific American, 1986
Describes experiments which focus on the perception of three dimensions. Discusses the cues about distance and depth and the role they have in perceptions of three dimensions. Evaluates the effect of color on the illusion on depth. (ML)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Color, Cues, Depth Perception

Kavsek, Michael J. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1999
Studied infant ability to extract depth information from a three-dimensional structure. Found evidence that 8-month-old infants distinguished between lines indicating edges, and lines indicating markings, and that they are able to use line junctions to perceive line drawings as depicting three-dimensional objects in the picture plane. (Author)

Allen, Sue; And Others – 1995
An effective way to teach the concept of image is to give students a model of human vision which incorporates a simple mechanism of depth perception. In this study two almost identical versions of a curriculum in geometrical optics were created. One used a mechanistic, interpretive eye model, and in the other the eye was modeled as a passive,…

Mitkin, A. – 1987
Reported are three series of experiments analyzing the development of the visual function of infants. The first experimental series was aimed at the investigation of infants' reaction to moving objects. The second experimental series dealt with the analysis of the development of binocular vision in infants. The goal of the third series was to…

Morrongiello, Barbara A.; Fenwick, Kimberley D. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1991
Infants of five, seven, and nine months were shown two video images on monitors placed side by side. Images were accompanied by a soundtrack that matched one of the images. Results indicated that age-related changes in infants' coordination of auditory and visual depth information took place between the ages of five and nine months. (SH)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Association (Psychology), Auditory Perception, Depth Perception

Field, Jeffery – Developmental Psychology, 1976
The reaching behavior of 12 infants in the presence of solid objects and pictures of objects placed within and beyond possible contact distance was videotaped in three sessions at 15, 19, and 24 weeks of age. (Author/MS)
Descriptors: Behavioral Science Research, Depth Perception, Early Childhood Education, Eye Hand Coordination

Livingstone, Margaret; Hubel, David – Science, 1988
Summarizes the anatomical, physiological, and psychological evidence related to the primate visual system. States that comparison of perceptual abilities with the electrophysiological properties of neurons may help deduce functions of visual areas. (RT)
Descriptors: Anatomy, Biological Sciences, Biology, Color
