Wells, Amy Stuart; Crain, Robert L. – Review of Educational Research, 1994
This review brings together 21 studies on the long-term effects of school desegregation on the life chances of African American students. These studies draw on perpetuation theory, a macro-micro theory of racial segregation. They support the idea that interracial contact in school can help blacks overcome perpetual segregation. (SLD)

Crain, Robert L. – Sociology of Education, 1971
A survey of 1,600 adult Negroes in northern metropolitan areas finds those who attended integrated rather than segregated schools are more likely to have had longer school attendance and score higher on a verbal test. Several reasons are offered as accounting for this effect of integration. (Author/DB)

Crain, Robert L.; Strauss, Jack – 1985
The effects of attending desegregated schools on the occupational attainment of blacks were examined through a 1983 follow-up study of students who began desegregated schooling in early elementary school in 1966 as part of a randomized experiment (Project Concern, Hartford, Connecticut) and of students in a control group. The students were nearly…

Crain, Robert L.; Mahard, Rita E. – American Journal of Sociology, 1983
An analysis of 93 research studies involving 323 samples of students reassigned from segregated to desegregated schools by government action determined that differences in findings can be attributed to differences in methodology. Of the seven types of methodologies studied, randomized experiments all showed positive achievement effects. (Author/KC)

Crain, Robert L.; And Others – 1992
This report compares the educational attainment and present attitudes of young black adults who did and did not participate in a program that allowed inner-city students to attend suburban schools. The desegregation program, Project Concern in Hartford, Connecticut, began in 1966 by randomly selecting one group of students to be offered the…

Crain, Robert L.; Mahard, Rita E. – 1977
A majority of seventy-three studies dealing with the effect of desegregation on black achievement conclude that desegregation has a beneficial effect on black achievement scores. These findings are in agreement with various national surveys that have found black achievement higher in predominantly white schools. However, a number of desegregation…

Wells, Amy Stuart; Crain, Robert L. – 1997
This description of the accomplishments and shortcomings of one school desegregation plan provides insights into much broader dialogue on the role of race in America. St. Louis (Missouri) and its suburbs demographically resemble many midsized contemporary metropolitan areas in the United States. What makes St. Louis unique is an urban-suburban…

Crain, Robert L. – 1974
This report is the response to a request from the United States Commission on Civil Rights that a research program be designed to accomplish two tasks: (1) to measure the effectiveness of different desegregation strategies in providing equality of educational experiences to black, Puerto Rican, Mexican-American, and Anglo students; (2) to provide…

Crain, Robert L. – 1973
Volume 2 of the evaluation report of the effects of ESAP comprises 5 working papers resulting from the evaluators' decision to explore the variety of research problems relevant to desegregation and policy making that they met with during the evaluation process. The first two papers deal with race relations in desegregated Southern schools: the…

Crain, Robert L.; Mahard, Rita E. – Harvard Civil Rights - Civil Liberties Law Review, 1982
Holds that, while courts possess the legal authority and technical skill to create school desegregation programs that can improve minority educational achievement, the success of a desegregation plan depends on how teachers, administrators, and parents implement it. Emphasizes monitoring of progress as a means of educational effectiveness among…

Crain, Robert L. – 1983
The decision by the National Institute of Education panel on the effects of school desegregation to select (for meta-analysis) a small group of preferred studies based upon criteria chosen in advance of examining the studies was, in principle, a mistake. One usually cannot know until the data have been examined which of several competing…

Crain, Robert L.; Hawley, Willis D. – 1981
This paper agrees that there are inadequacies in school desegregation research and suggests strategies for improving its quality and availability as well as improving current educational policies. It is suggested that the interaction of power and resources determines the post-desegregation changes in school policies. The effects of desegregation…

Crain, Robert L.; And Others – 1984
A long-term study of the effects of school desegregation, based on the tracing of students initially involved in a 1966 desegregation plan, is reported on in this document. The students, who were from Hartford, Connecticut, and were nearly all Black, were traced from their first desegregation in elementary school until after high school…

Crain, Robert L.; Mahard, Rita E. – 1982
A meta analysis of 93 research reports on school desegregation and black achievement was conducted to determine (1) why the study results differed as to apparent desegregation effects; and (2) whether some desegregation plans produced greater achievement gains than others. An analysis indicated that inconsistencies in research findings were mainly…
