Newman, Michelle G.; Fisher, Aaron J. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 2013
Objective: This study examined (a) duration of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) as a moderator of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) versus its components (cognitive therapy and self-control desensitization) and (b) increases in dynamic flexibility of anxious symptoms during the course of psychotherapy as a mediator of this moderation. Degree of…

Williams, S. Lloyd; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1985
Compared desensitization and self-efficacy models of phobia treatment in height phobics. Self-efficacy treatment proved to be significantly more effective than desensitization treatment in restoring subjects' behavioral functioning, in raising their perceptions of self-efficacy, and in reducing their anticipated anxiety and thoughts of danger.…

Morrow, Gary R. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1984
Investigated whether the relaxation part of systematic desensitization could be learned by cancer patients from a prerecorded audiotape. Results showed four of five patients assigned to a taped-relaxation group experienced nausea while listening to the audiotape, whereas none of five patients taught muscle relaxation in person reported nausea. McReynolds, William T.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1973
Systematic desensitization was compared with two attention-placebo control treatments--one taken from Paul and one currently devised as an elaborate, highly impressive therapeutic'' experience--and no treatment. It was hypothesized that (a) fear reductions following desensitization would be no greater than those associated with an equally…

Primo, Richard V.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1972
A six-to nine-month interview follow-up showed that five of the seven traceable Ss given the interpersonal aversion-systematic desensitization treatment had been abstinent, compared with only one of seven treated by the interpersonal aversion-control procedure. (Author)

McReynolds, William T.; Tori, Christopher – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1972
It was predicted that phobic Ss receiving systematic desensitization would show greater reductions on both fear-related behavior measures and simulated fear measures than Ss receiving relaxation treatment or no treatment at all. The prediction was confirmed. (Author)

Miller, William R.; DiPilato, Marina – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1983
Investigated the role of relaxation training as a component of desensitization to nightmares in adults (N=32). Results showed an 80 percent reduction in nightmares reported by 20 clients, of whom 12 reported total elimination of symptoms at 25-week follow-up, suggesting the effectiveness of a behavioral approach in treating nightmares. Tori, Christopher; Worell, Leonard – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1973
This study compared counterconditioning, expectancy and cognitive coping variables in reducing fear and anxiety of snake-phobic college students. The outcome measures of the high-expectancy placebo group and the two cognitive-coping groups were significantly superior to those of the counter-conditioning and no-treatment groups, thus supporting the…

Smith, Ronald E.; Nye, S. Lee – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1973
Both Desensitization and implosive therapy resulted in significant decreases in scores on Sarason's Test Anxiety Scale. However, the desensitization group also demonstrated a significant reduction in state anxiety assessed during simulated testing sessions and a significant increase in grade point average, while the implosive therapy group showed…

Bonner, Jack; Feather, Benjamin – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1972
The present study examines how Ss perceive the same E-therapists. Results show that E-therapists are perceived differently depending on the technique used, and that perceptual differences are related to locus of control. (Author)

Weinman, Bernard; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1972
It is concluded that systematic desensitization or relaxation therapy is not effective in inducing assertive behavior in the male chronic schizophrenic. The treatment of choice for the older chronic male schizophrenic remains socioenvironmental therapy. (Author)

Rappaport, Herbert – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1972
Within an experimental paradigm that simulated systematic desensitization, the effects of manipulated cognitive expectancy on avoidance behavior were evaluated. The results indicated that both overt avoidance behavior and two verbal indexes were differentially affected by expectancy and that no relationship between avoidance behavior and autonomic…

Goldfried, Marvin R. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1971
A description of a mediational model to explain the effectiveness of desensitization and a discussion of the available corroborative research findings for this alternative explanation are given. Also, specific procedural modifications for systematic desensitization are suggested. (Author)

Use of Electromyographic Biofeedback and Cue-Controlled Relaxation in the Treatment of Test Anxiety.

Counts, D. Kenneth; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1978
Studied use of electromyographic (CMG) biofeedback to increase efficacy of cue-controlled relaxation training in treatment of test anxiety. Results indicated cue-controlled relaxation was effective in increasing test performance for test-anxious subjects. EMG biofeedback did not contribute to effectiveness. Self-report measures of anxiety are…
