Hurley, Raymond M.; Singer, Jay – Journal of Childhood Communication Disorders, 1985
Four unresolved issues and research needs in central auditory processing disorders in children are addressed: (1) early identification through screening; (2) relationship between test battery results and auditory behaviors; (3) relationship between test battery results and therapy planning, and (4) new assessment procedures. (Author/CL)

Lyon, David J.; Lyon, Mary E. – A.C.E.H.I. Journal, 1981
A survey on the methods and system of detecting hearing loss in infants in Canada's Maritime Provinces is reported, and results are related to other research in Canada and the United States. Results are said to show inadequate detection. Recommendations, including increased collaboration between health and education professionals, are made. (CL)

Stone, Wendy L.; Coonrod, Elaine E.; Ousley, Opal Y. – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2000
A study examined the validity of the Screening Tool for Autism in Two-Year-Olds (STAT) as a stage 2 screening instrument in a clinic-based sample of two-year-olds with autism (n=12) and with nonautistic developmental disorders (n=21). Results provide preliminary support for the utility of the STAT as an early screening of autism. (Contains…

Wanczycki, Winnifred – Special Education in Canada, 1983
The author warns of dangers associated with Ontarios's Kindergarten Early Identification Program, including hasty and incomplete assessment of children who will then be labeled exceptional, biases affecting children with cultural differences, and inadequacy of many screening and assessment instruments. (CL)

Kurtz, P. David; Rule, Sarah – Journal of Special Education Technology, 1982
Information about early intervention was disseminated via mass media and group meetings. Findings revealed that parents attending group meetings learned specific information about available services and legal educational rights. Mass media stimulated requests for information but did not measurably affect parents' knowledge of early intervention.…

Prendergast, Susan G.; Lartz, Maribeth Nelson; Fiedler, Barbara Casson – American Annals of the Deaf, 2002
A survey interviewed parents of 77 children with severe to profound hearing loss while attending an educational program at an Illinois state residential school. The children had lower ages of identification than those reported in national studies and in an early study in Illinois. Delays in early intervention are discussed. (Contains references.)…

Vietze, Peter M.; Coates, Deborah – Topics in Early Childhood Special Education, 1986
Seven techniques for measuring information processing in infants are proposed to aid in the early identification of mental retardation. The techniques are based on conditioning, attentional, and manual exploration paradigms and could be combined into an assessment battery more valid than current infant IQ tests in predicting later disability.…

Shannon, Dorothy A.; And Others – Pediatrics, 1984
The brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) was evaluated as a hearing screening test in 168 high-risk newborns. The BAEP was found to be a sensitive procedure for the early identification of hearing-impaired newborns. However, the yield of significant hearing abnormalities was less than predicted in other studies using BAEP. (Author/CL)

Osterling, Julie; Dawson, Geraldine – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1994
Analysis of home videotapes of autistic and normally developing children's first-year birthday parties found that autistic children displayed fewer social and joint attention behaviors and more autistic symptoms.
