The important role pupil control matters play in teacher ratings of their principals' leadership is demonstrated. Guided by two hypotheses, this study found that teachers perceived their principals' pupil control views to be stricter than was actually the case. (GK)

Responses from a sample of 71 secondary teachers and 1,272 students were consistent with the hypothesis that teachers' sense of power would be directly associated with the consistency of their beliefs and behavior concerning pupil control. Some speculations were advanced concerning additional influences on teacher belief-behavior consistency. (NEC)

The hypothesis that highly militant teachers would favor strict control of students was tested using the Attitudinal Militancy Scale and the Pupil Control Ideology Form. Responses from 229 secondary school teachers from six school districts in the northeastern United States did not support the hypothesis. (PP)
