Berkell, Dianne E. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1982
The effects of varying training settings and objects on the development of skill generalization were studied with 60 retarded students (5-16 years old). Research procedures were identical for all groups except for the manipulation of settings and objects. A factorial analysis of covariance supported the prediction that the visual discrimination…

Mulvaney, Dallas E.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1981
Two normal and two mentally retarded children were trained to earn pennies by pressing a key according to a multiple variable-interval extinction schedule of reinforcement. Retarded children differed from normal children by producing more positive than negative discriminative stimuli. (Author/DB)

Strand, S. C.; Morris, R. C. – Applied Research in Mental Retardation, 1986
Efficiency of three discrimination training procedures was compared for 21 mentally handicapped children. Results showed that two programmed techniques (graded stimulus and prompt fading) did not differ significantly, but both were significantly superior to trial-and-error learning. (Author/CL)

Toister, Richard P.; Birnbrauer, J. S. – J Exp Child Psychol, 1969
Experiment 1 supported in part by National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Research Grant M2232. Experiment 2 submitted as the senior author's PhD dissertation at the University of Miami and supported by NIMH grant MH-14914.
Descriptors: Discrimination Learning, Extinction (Psychology), Handicapped Children, Mental Retardation

Smeets, Paul M.; And Others – Research in Developmental Disabilities, 1990
Two time-delay conditions for teaching complex visual discriminations to 14 normal preschoolers, 12 with mild mental retardation, and 11 with moderate mental retardation were compared. Results indicated that for all populations and stimuli, time delay of multiple dynamic distinctive-feature prompts produced learning, while time delay of the single…

Irvin, Larry K. – Education and Training of the Mentally Retarded, 1976
Evaluated was the use of easy to hard visual discrimination vocational training procedures with 24 institutionalized trainable mentally retarded Ss (16-43 years old). (PT)
Descriptors: Adults, Discrimination Learning, Institutionalized Persons, Learning Processes
Smith, Jerome; Tunick, Jeffrey – J Exp Child Psychol, 1969
Study supported by grants from the University of Connecticut Research Foundation and from the U.S. Office of Education.
Descriptors: Cues, Discrimination Learning, Handicapped Children, Kinesthetic Perception
Jensen, Kai – 1968
Simple and complex learning and problem solving situations were employed with mentally retarded children and adults. In the Rotation-Discrimination Complex and the Size-Discrimination Simple experiments, upper and lower test achievement subgroups were subjected to two basic types of visual discrimination at different levels of task complexity.…
