Catalfamo, Holly – Educational Planning, 2018
The collapse of the global economy in 2008 had a devastating impact on manufacturing and other sectors across Canada. Displaced workers were unprepared for the demands of the new knowledge-based economy and found that they required retraining to secure employment in modern, highly technical workplaces. In Ontario, the introduction of the Second…

Ci, Wen; Frenette, Marc; Morissette, René – Statistics Canada, 2016
Faced with job loss, displaced workers may choose to return to school to help them reintegrate into the labour force. Job losses in a given local labour market may also induce workers who have not yet been laid off to pre-emptively enrol in postsecondary (PS) institutions, as a precautionary measure. Combining microdata and grouped data, this…

Nelson, Scott Reynolds – Chronicle of Higher Education, 2013
Technology shifts gears. The workers who control it need to learn how to shift gears, too. Workers brought up with universal schooling would respect authority, learn enough "geometry and mechanics" to use in their trades, keep invention alive, and finally see through "the interested complaints of faction and sedition." In other…

Arthur, Nancy; Flynn, Sarah – International Journal for Educational and Vocational Guidance, 2011

Kuhn, Peter; Sweetman, Arthur – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1998
Data from two Canadian surveys showed that only 32% of dislocated workers had unionized jobs before displacement; their wage loss represented about 80% of wages lost by all displaced workers surveyed. Losing union status was associated with large wage losses regardless of whether they switched industries. (SK)

Friesen, Jane – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1997
Canadian Displaced Workers Survey data indicate that group advance-notice laws, which apply to large-scale layoffs, reduced the length of displaced workers' joblessness. Individual notice laws had little effect, perhaps because laid-off workers whose plants remain open may expect to be rehired and therefore delay job search. (SK)

Crossley, Thomas F.; And Others – Journal of Human Resources, 1994
Canadian displaced worker data show that predisplacement wages rise at about the same rate, but women lose more from displacement than men and loss increases with tenure. Results do not support the hypothesis that women accumulate less job-specific human capital; gender differences in job search may be a cause. (SK)

Grzeda, Maurice M. – Career Development International, 1999
Regression analysis of data from 94 Canadian managers whose jobs had been eliminated explored the correlation between career resilience and five job facets (duties, skills, field, occupation, and function). Career resilience was positively related to intended and active changes in duties, skills, and functions. (SK)

Colleges Ontario, 2009
Ontario has an opportunity to implement meaningful and transformational changes that exploit the potential for growth in the new economy and drive it's prosperity to unprecedented levels. But the threats to Ontario's future are just as great. Failing to move forward now with significant measures could leave Ontario unprepared for the challenges…

Mazerolle, Maurice J.; Singh, Gangaram – Journal of Vocational Education & Training, 2001
Of 1,740 displaced workers in 1982, 387 responded to a 1992 survey. Of the 34 who were retrained, 27 had a high school education or higher, suggesting that postdisplacement job training should be targeted to workers with higher education levels. Others should first be provided with basic education. (Contains 44 references.) (SK)

Madill, Helen M.; And Others – 1991
Although work continues to play a significant role in the lives of most men and an increasing number of women that role is changing. This study examined the intrinsic value of work. The 53 subjects for this study were drawn from a review of 160 files for clients who were referred to the Occupational Performance Analysis Unit at the University of…

Leigh, Duane E. – 1995
This monograph takes the perspective that increased awareness of how active labor market programs operate in other nations can substantially improve the way in which the United States deals with worker displacement. Chapter 1 considers the costs of worker displacement and how government programs designed to reduce these costs are evaluated.…
