Bastaits, Kim; Ponnet, Koen; Mortelmans, Dimitri – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 2012
Research suggests that high parental support and control improves children's well-being. However, a large part of these studies have focused on the parenting of married parents. Research on parenting after a divorce, mainly has focused on parenting of divorced mothers, with few exceptions concentrating primarily on non-residential fathers.…

The present study examined conceptions of "what makes an adult" within a sample of adolescents (13-19 years) from divorced families. Brown, Ana C.; Wolchik, Sharlene A.; Tein, Jenn-Yun; Sandler, Irwin N. – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 2007
Appraisals about the implications of stressful events that are evaluated as involving a threat to self (negative self-evaluation, negative evaluation from others, rejection by others) have been shown to place youth at risk for the development of mental health problems. This longitudinal study tested a protective-stabilizing interactive model, in…

Over 400 students, grades 3-8, who had experienced father loss through divorce and whose mothers had not remarried demonstrated significantly lower self-concepts than those who were from intact families. Compared the responses of 381 late adolescent and young adult children of divorce and nondivorce on a new multidimensional measure of parentification assessing the extent and fairness of past and present family caregiving. Tucker, Corinna Jenkins; Barber, Bonnie L.; Eccles, Jacquelynne S. – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 2001
Investigated the frequency of advice about life plans that older adolescents in always-married (n=544) and divorced (n=95) families received from mothers, fathers, and siblings. Findings suggest that adolescents from both types of families rely on mothers for advice, but adolescents from divorced families depended less often on fathers and…

Jeynes, William H. – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1999
Used data from the National Educational Longitudinal Survey to study the effects of remarriage following divorce on children's academic achievement. Hoffman, John P. – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 2006
A number of models have been proposed to explain the relationship between family structure and adolescent problem behaviors, including several that consider parent-child relations, family income, stress, and residential mobility. However, studies have not explored whether the different types of communities within which families reside affect the…

Moore, DeWayne; Hotch, Deborah F. – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1982
Among late adolescent males, parental divorce was highly related to Emotional separation as a home-leaving indicator; for females, being a firstborn was associated with Personal Control as a home-leaving indicator. Explored links between self-image, family structure (divorced or intact), parent-child relations, and gender at 3 intervals over 10 years during adolescence to early adulthood. Results suggest a consistent relationship between high parental care, low overprotective control, and better self-image scores with a stronger effect among subjects from…

Long, Barbara H. – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1986
The effects of family structure and parental discord on the self-esteem of 199 female undergraduates were investigated.
