Horowitz-Kraus, Tzipi; Breznitz, Zvia – Dyslexia, 2011
Speed of processing (SOP) is a crucial factor in fluent reading and is measured using reading rate. This measure is commonly used to examine correct reading patterns, yet in the present study it is employed to determine whether differences in SOP exist for correct and incorrect reading. One of the characteristics of dyslexia is slow and inaccurate…

Berninger, Virginia W.; Lee, Yen-Ling; Abbott, Robert D.; Breznitz, Zvia – Annals of Dyslexia, 2013
To identify effective treatment for both the spelling and word decoding problems in dyslexia, 24 students with dyslexia in grades 4 to 9 were randomly assigned to treatments A (n = 12) or B (n = 12) in an after-school reading-writers' workshop at the university (thirty 1-h sessions twice a week over 5 months). First, both groups received step 1…

Beidas, Hanin; Khateb, Asaid; Breznitz, Zvia – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 2013
The question of which cognitive impairments are primarily associated with dyslexia has been a source of continuous debate. This study examined the cognitive profile of Hebrew-speaking compensated adult dyslexics and investigated whether their cognitive abilities accounted for a unique variance in their reading performance. Sixty-nine young adults…

Horowitz-Kraus, Tzipi; Breznitz, Zvia – International Journal of Disability, Development and Education, 2011
The activity level of the error monitoring system for processing isolated versus contextual words in Hebrew was studied in adults with dyslexia and skilled readers while committing reading errors. Behavioural measures and event-related potentials were measured during a lexical decision task using words in a list and sentences. Error-related…

Breznitz, Zvia – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 2002
Investigates whether asynchrony of speed of processing between visual-orthographic and auditory-phonological modalities can account for word recognition deficits among dyslexic readers. Indicates that dyslexic readers were slower than control readers in most of the experimental tasks. Proposes a theory suggesting that asynchrony between the…

Katzir, Tami; Shaul, Shelly; Breznitz, Zvia; Wolf, Maryanne – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 2004
Cross-linguistic studies provide a unique tool for the identification of universal processes in oral and written language, both in development and in breakdown ("Annual Review of psychology," 52, 369?396). Examining the differential strengths and weaknesses of children with dyslexia in contrasting orthographies can help illumine both the more…

Breznitz, Zvia – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1997
Results of a study with 52 dyslexic children and 52 normal readers show that reading acceleration through computer-controlled reading rates improves reading performance in both groups, but auditory masking by playing a song is beneficial only to the dyslexic children. Implications are discussed in terms of phonological processing. (SLD)

Breznitz, Zvia – Scientific Studies of Reading, 2005
This research was aimed at contributing to the current understanding of the underlying factors of naming speed and the causes of naming speed deficits. Forty regular readers and 40 dyslexic university students participated in the study. Electrophysiological (Event-Related Potentials [ERPs]) and behavioral measures were employed. Behavioral…

Meyler, Ann; Breznitz, Zvia – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 2005
The authors examined the processing of phonological and orthographic word representations among 17 dyslexic and 16 normal college-level readers using Event-Related Potential measures. They focused on 2 early components--the P200 and the P300. The results revealed P200 and P300 components of lower amplitude and later latency among dyslexic readers…

Breznitz, Zvia – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1997
The hypothesis that gains in reading performance occurring among dyslexic children during individually paced reading are partially attributable to changes in short-term memory processing was tested with 23 elementary school students. Findings provide support for a causal role for short-term memory functioning in text processing. (SLD)

Brain Activity of Regular and Dyslexic Readers while Reading Hebrew as Compared to English Sentences
Breznitz, Zvia; Oren, Revital; Shaul, Shelley – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 2004
The aim of the present study was to examine differences among "regular" and dyslexic adult bilingual readers when processing reading and reading related skills in their first (L1 Hebrew) and second (L2 English) languages. Brain activity during reading Hebrew and English unexpected sentence endings was also studied. Behavioral and…

Meyler, Ann; Breznitz, Zvia – Dyslexia, 2005
This study examined visual, auditory, and cross-modal temporal pattern processing at the nonlinguistic and sublexical linguistic levels, and the relationships between these abilities and decoding skill. The central question addressed whether dyslexic readers are impaired in their perception of timing, as assessed by sensitivity to rhythm.…

Miller-Shaul, Shelley; Breznitz, Zvia – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 2004
The authors examined the differences in performance between 30 dyslexic readers in 4th grade, 30 dyslexic readers attending university, and age-matched normal readers for both groups on a lexical decision task to evaluate the underlying factors of dyslexia that persist into adulthood. In both age groups, the dyslexic readers were significantly…
