Obtaining Marketable Workforce Skills: A Qualitative Study of Former Student Resident Assistants in Texas
Michael Rex Wilkinson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
The literature indicates that some recent graduates of US colleges and universities are having difficulty obtaining jobs that satisfy salary and work environment expectations. While industries differ in focus, employers are similar with what they want in recently graduated individuals beginning their first full time job. Furthermore, the challenges that recent graduates face when entering the global workplace make it difficult for them to transition successfully from college into a career. As such, it is more important than ever to ensure workforce skills are obtained by students during college. Co-curricular involvement provides students experiential opportunities to develop talents, and enhance skills that help prepare them to be more competitive in the global workplace. The need for students to obtain skills through co-curricular involvement is essential for their career development. It is vital that these experiences can be articulated effectively to future employers. This study interviewed recent graduates of traditional residential universities in Texas who served as a resident assistant (RA) regarding their perceived marketable workforce skills acquisition, and if they discussed the RA experience in their job interviews. This study found that recently graduated students believe they obtained skills through their experiences employed on campus as an RA. These skills matched the main qualities that businesses look for when hiring new graduates. It is suggested that student affairs professionals continue to tell the story of the marketable workforce skills that are obtained through involvement on campus as a resident assistant and infuse it into their future training and development plans.
