Students' Use of Learning Management System in Hybrid Learning: Mobile or Not
Bai, Hua
International Journal on E-Learning, v21 n1 p5-23 Jan 2022
This paper reports a study of students' use of Desire2Learn (D2L), a learning management system in hybrid classes that had more asynchronous online learning than face-to-face meetings. The participants in the study accessed D2L using a computer browser, mobile browser and the mobile learning management system (m-LMS) app, Brightspace Pulse. The frequency that the participants accessed D2L in different ways to engage in learning activities, their preferred access and their perceptions of Brightspace Pulse were examined. It was found that the computers were used more frequently than the smartphones when accessing D2L to review course materials, participate in online discussion and submit assignments. Most of the students preferred using a computer browser to access D2L when engaging in various learning activities. However, more than half of the students preferred using Brightspace Pulse to check grades. Overall, the students had positive perceptions of using the m-LMS app, although the computer was the major tool in learning. Recommendations on designing online learning to take advantage of the m-LMS app and optimize the mobile learning experience are provided.
