A Mixed Methods Study of an Alternative Educational Program for At-Risk Students in South Carolina

This research study focused on the theories that support and underpin the Nine Characteristics of High-Performing Schools. Much of the data presented about high-performing schools lack data about schools that are nontraditional; the nontraditional school, otherwise known as an alternative school or alternative learning placement, supports students who fail to thrive in the traditional school setting. The study employed a sequential explanatory mixed methods design. This design utilized an initial quantitative phase of data collection and analysis, followed by a qualitative phase of data collection and analysis. The purpose of the qualitative phase was to gain further insight regarding the data collected during the quantitative phase and focused on comprehending outliers that were not fully congruent with the collected data. The Nine Characteristics of High-Performing Schools, the Self-Determination Theory, and Kohlberg's Theory of Motivation were the foundation of the conceptual framework. The findings of this study indicated that all nine characteristics were present, although Characteristic 7, Focused Professional Development; Characteristic 8, A Supportive Learning Environment; and Characteristic 9, High Levels of Family and Community Involvement was not as strongly supported by participant responses. Further, findings indicated that professional learning and parent involvement were not as strongly represented and therefore may have an impact on SEL at this school. Additionally, the findings of the research determined that the success of the alternative school depends on the quality of the school leadership, the support and training of the teachers, and the dedication to the goals and vision crafted by the school stakeholders.
